Notes for this person

Aus Find A Grave: David Hoyt Sheets GEBURT 21 Okt 1936 Mechanicsburg, Boone County, Indiana, USA TOD 13 Okt 2022 (im Alter von 85) Frankfort, Clinton County, Indiana, USA BESTATTUNG Kilmore United Methodist Church Cemetery Frankfort, Clinton County, Indiana, USA GEDENKSTÄTTEN-ID 244765098 Mr. David Hoyt Sheets, of Frankfort, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family and moved into his eternal dwelling place in the Heavens on Thursday, October 13, 2022 in Frankfort. After 85 incredible years here on earth, the Lord finally called him home. David's story began on October 21, 1936 in Mechanicsburg, Indiana to the late Oscar Hoyt and Catherine Mildred (Schimmel) Sheets. On David's 18th birthday, left his parents to be joined in marriage with the love of his life, Sharon Ruth Hammersley. She survives at home after 67 amazingly beautiful years together. Interestingly enough, Sharon's only sister, the late Doris M. Hammersley married David's only brother, the late Oscar Herman Sheets. The confusion that arrangement would cause down the road kept a smile on everyone's faces for years to come. Also surviving David are his sons Daniel D. (Tina), Mark C. (Lisa) and Jonathon A. (Saundra) Sheets, as well as grandchildren Mallory (Joe) Doyel and Jay (Megan), Ben (Emily), Claire, Rachael and Rabecka Sheets; great grandchildren Rhodes and Bernadette "Birdie" Doyel, and an entire generation of loving extended family, dear friends, golfing buddies, fishing liars, work associates and probably even a game warden or two. Family and friends have always been considered gifts from God, and He gave abundantly to David. Better yet, David never neglected his gift but cherished it more than anything else; especially with his grandchildren. While no formal funeral home services have been scheduled, a private graveside committal will take place at a later date at the Kilmore United Methodist Church Cemetery, 4159 N. CR 0 Ew, Frankfort. David's nephew, Pastor Gary Sheets of Middlebury (IN) Community Church of the Nazarene, will officiate the service. Arrangements were assisted by Pastor Gary's colleagues at Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart. David was an independent, hard-working man proved by both his character and accomplishments. Those that knew him best knew that his determination was as strong as steel. David wasn't quick to admit if he needed someone's help, but if the roles were reversed, it would always be David to the rescue! He was the owner/operator of S&S construction out of Frankfort for over 52 years, building homes, businesses, churches, barns and just about anything else one could imagine, including the Deer Track Golf Club, which he designed, built, and then operated. He took great pride in his work and considered himself fortunate to be able to help build his hometown and community. It was rumored within David's family that he really wanted to be a pastor, but since every Nazarene Church in the area already had a Sheets preaching from the pulpit, he decided to become a contractor instead. It was, however, no rumor that David loved the serenity of fishing, and he'd wet a hook just about any time he had a chance. He had many "honey-holes", but his absolute favorite place to fish was Ear Falls, Canada, where he was known for over 50 years as the official "Walleye King". During that time, David taught many people how to walleye fish. In that respect, his greatest joy came when he helped his great-niece Ashley catch her first trophy walleye on his lake, "Lake Unexpected" in Ear Falls. David was always the proud captain when he took the helm of his fishing boat the "Reel Chillin'". More fish have come over the gunwale of that boat than could ever be counted, and in an exciting turn of events, the "Reel Chillin'" will continue to sail in her grand tradition thanks to Uncle David turning over her helm to none other than his nephew, Cap'n Gary Sheets. They say that Jesus fed the five thousand with two fish, but if you gave David a Booyah BYBJ12 ½ oz Boo Jig Lure with a weed guard and an 18 degree rise on a nickel-plated spinner, he'd give just about anyone a run for their money! He also loved to bowl, both in leagues and with his family, take long, mind-clearing rides on his Honda Goldwing, and was an avid golfer. He also spent nearly 20 years as an IHSAA basketball referee, and we should mention at this point that despite what several disgruntled parents, coaches or players might have said, David was not legally blind, deaf, nor did he have any type of "relations" with someone's else's "momma"! It should be known, though, that David lived for his vacation trips to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Its beautifully forested parks and hazy, majestic mountains struck the right chord with David, and he simply loved being there. Whether it was a fall walk along a Cades Cove trail, or a trip to the candy shoppe to watch saltwater taffy being made, or taking a ride on the sky lift, David was all about the Smokies. He just never could figure out the free-floating, running, giant water spigot at the entrance of the old Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum! Friends and family wishing to make a monetary donation in David's memory may do so by donating to the Frankfort Church of the Nazarene. Additionally, please be sure to thoroughly browse David's obit page, as you are able to leave condolences and memories, post photographs on his memory wall, and order other funerary items in regard to the family. We hope that you will take the time to join us as we say our last good-byes to a dad, a brother, an uncle, a son, a friend, a husband, an amazing man and a first-class "Poppy" whose memory will forever live in the hearts of those he loved!!
