Merlin, 78, of Weymouth and Myrtle Beach, SC died on Jan. 30, 2011 at Shore Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Jamaica Plain, he worked for New England Telephone Company for many years before retiring in 1991. He is survived by his wife Patricia A. (OConnell) Merlin; children Vernon D. Merlin Jr. and Ann C. Merlin of Weymouth, Nancy M. LaRocque and her husband Richard of Annapolis, MD and James W. Merlin and his wife Patricia of Duxbury. Loving grandfather of Emily and Sean Merlin of Duxbury and Ryan LaRocque of Annapolis, MD. Also survived by his sister June C. (Merlin) Robley of Watertown. A veteran of the Korean War and member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, he was a hockey and golf enthusiast who enjoyed his retirement with his wife, family and friends in Myrtle Beach, SC. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the McDonald Funeral Home, South Weymouth at 809 Main St., (Rte. 18 opp. So. Shore Hosp.) Wednesday from 4:00 | 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be private on Thursday with a private burial in the Massachusetts National Cemetery.
