Aus Find A Grave: Birth: Nov., 1921, USADeath: Sep. 4, 2009 Las Vegas Clark County Nevada, USA Garvin Wagner Haist, beloved husband of Jo Ann Haist, passed away Friday, Sept. 4, 2009. He was 87, and a 20-year resident of Sun City Summerlin in Las Vegas. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Haist; second wife, Shirley; brother, Calvin; and sister, Barbara. Garvin led a full life. Born in Marengo, Iowa, Thanksgiving day, 1921, he moved to Los Angeles in 1939. Three years later, he joined the U.S. Army to serve in World War II. After the war, he attended USC, graduating with a masters in education in 1950. During his college years, he met his first wife, Marie. Their daughter, Kathlyn "Kate" was born shortly before he graduated, and their daughter, Elizabeth, arrived four years later. He enjoyed a long and distinguished career teaching junior high English, history and related subjects with LAUSD during which time he was a leader in the teachers union. In the late 70s, he turned typography, a longtime sideline, into a second career, eventually opening G/S Typography in Woodland Hills, Calf., with Shirley and Bonnie. Upon full retirement, he and Shirley moved to Las Vegas. Here Garvin served the fundraising efforts of the Summerlin Chapter of City of Hope in many capacities, including president, treasurer and editor of the newsletter. He was a devout Christian and an active member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church. During his last years, his life was enriched by his marriage to Jo Ann. Garvin loved traveling, bowling, gardening, singing in the choir and spending time at the Sun Coast. Most of all, he loved spending time with his doubly extended family. Garvin will be greatly missed for his unwavering love, his dependability, his gently, caring nature, his keen sense of humor, his storytelling and his big warm hugs.
