Notes for this person

Havana, ND: The funeral for Francis Lee “Franny” Maly, Jr. will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 13, 2016 at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Forman. Intern Pastor Nicholas Rohde will officiate and interment will be in the Havana Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 Wednesday at the church, concluding with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Franny passed away Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the Oakes Community Hospital at the age of 58, with his family at his side. The Price Funeral Chapel of Forman has been entrusted with Franny’s arrangements. Francis Lee Maly, Jr. was born July 8, 1958 in Toole, UT to Rozilla Bernice (Morris) and Francis Lee Maly, Sr. As a youngster, he moved with his family to the Havana, ND area where he grew up. Franny attended grade school in Havana, went to Jr. High in Rutland, and graduated from Sargent Central High School in Forman in 1976. After completing his education, Franny worked with the Pherson Harvesting crew of Rutland for a few years. On February 2, 1980, Franny was united in marriage with Betty Lou Padfield in Conde, SD. They made their home in Havana. In 1983, Franny took a job with Dakotah in Veblen and remained with them for four years. He then went to work with Heimbuch Farms near Brampton. In 1989 he started working for Truss Pros in Britton and a few years later worked at the Gwinner Farmers Elevator. He remained there until 2008 when he started driving truck for RDO, a job he continued until his passing. Franny was a member of the Havana Trinity Lutheran Church. He had served on the Havana Cemetery Board and was a member of the Havana City Council for 12 years. He was also an active member of the Forman/Havana Volunteer Fire Department. For the past 40 years, Franny had been a member of the Havana Softball Team, a pastime he truly enjoyed. Even at his age, he could always be counted on for getting a good solid single! For a number of years, Franny was part of the M and J Dart League and one year they took the North Dakota State Championship. He was a real “Fix-it” man and loved to spend time building things with his grandchildren. He loved the Fourth of July and for years had been instrumental in organizing and firing the annual Havana Fireworks display. He knew every back road for many miles around. Perhaps he was his happiest when ice fishing. Many envied his ability to catch the big ones with the simplest of tackle. All who knew him will miss his chuckle and wit. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 36 years, Betty Maly of Havana; a daughter, Kristy (Ryan) Scepaniak of Aberdeen, SD; a son, Jesse (Bobbi Jo) Maly of Havana; three grandchildren: Isaiah, Noah and Grace Scepaniak; his father, Francis Maly, Sr. of Rutland; three brothers: Pat Maly of Denver; Kenneth Maly of Chinook, MT; and Kevin (Wendy) Maly of Forman. Preceding him in death were his maternal and paternal grandparents, and his mother. Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Betty Maly - 67 South Weber St. - Havana, ND 58043.
