WILNA VAN BLARCUM OF MANHATTAN Seven American Officers Among The 22 Persons Aboard Large Airplane Believed To Be Bomber Ferry LONDON, Aug 12 (AP) - The death of seven American officers in the British armed forces along with 15 others in the crash of a large airplane described as of the "transoceanic" type was announced today. (The plane was believed to have been a bomber ferry. Announcement of the crash also was made in Montreal by the RAF ferry command.) Eight of the victims were Canadians. The plane crashed on a hillside Saturday just after leaving a British airport. A number of the bodies were recovered by more than 200 searchers, including holiday-makers and servicemen on leave. (Six of the dead were from the United Kingdom and one from Australia, the Canadian announcement said. On the death list were 11 captains, 10 radio operators, and a flying engineer). (It was believed in Montreal the big plane was bound for Canada with crews to fly bombers back to Britain). Notify Parents LAWRENCE, Aug. 12 (AP) - Capt. George T. Harris, 34, Lawrence, Kan., a member of the ferry command of the British Royal Air Force, has been killed in a plane crash in which 21 others lost their lives, his parents were notifed today by the R.A.F. Harris joined the British air transport auxiliary in September, 1940, returned here early this year and took additional training at Kansas City before going back to Canada where he was promoted to a captaincy and assigned to ferry planes to England. He began flying in 1926. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Harris, who had planned to leave Saturday for Montreal to visit him; his widow of Montreal; a son, George T. jr.; three brothers, Edward, Neil and Glen of Lawrence, and two sisters, Miss Nancy Harris of Lawrence and Mrs. Wilma Van Barclum of Manhattan. Consolidated Liberator (LB-30A) AM261 of the Atlantic Return Ferry Organisation, flew into Mullach Buidhe north of Goat Fell on the Isle of Arran on 10th August 1941 The aircraft had take off from Heathfield (Ayr) to fly to Gander in eastern Canada with ferry crews on board with the intention of those crews ferrying new aircraft back across the Atlantic. Shortly after take off the aircraft entered cloud and flew into Mullach Buidhe near the head of Coire Lan. The flight crews onboard were from Royal Air Force Ferry Command, Air Transport Auxiliary and British Overseas Airways Corporation. All 22 of the crew and passengers perished in the crash making it the worst crash on Arran. This aircraft had been used less than two weeks earlier to fly the Duke of Kent across the Atlantic, the first such time a member of the royal family had crossed the Atlantic by air. All of the crew and passengers were buried on Arran except Radio Officer Henry Green who was buried at Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey.
