He came to America in 1849-1850 as a baby. Nothing is known about his father but his mother, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Weber, died on the way over and was buried along the Mississippi River while enroute from Germany. His father left him with an uncle, Frank Weber, brother of his mother and they settled in Covington, Kentucky. Some family information states he was taken by the riverboat captain to his uncle in Covington, Kentucky to be reared by him. While still a boy, he ran away, and enlisted in Company I - 15th Kentucky Infantry Union Army and served in the Civil War as a drummer at the age of 12. He was wounded, discharged, and reenlisted serving until the close of the war. While in the Army, a truck containing all of his father's family records was destroyed leaving him without information concerning his Heinemann ancestors. After the war, he went to Columbus, Indiana, where he remained for several years. He then went to Paris, Illinois. Stephen married Samantha Jane Watts (b. December 25, 1852, Clark County, Kentucky, d. November 27, 1926, Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia) on February 27, 1873 in Ashmore, Illinois at the residence of her mother by Rev. Goodnight. She was the daughter of Beverly Daniel Watts and Josephine Fisher Watts. He and Samantha resided first in Coles County, Kentucky, then in Shelby County, Illinois, then in Coles County, Illinois. To them were born 4 children: William Beverly Heinemann (b. December 19, 1873, Coles County, Illinois, d. abt. 1960), Josephine Pearl Heinemann (b. May 22, 1879, Homer, Coles County, Illinois, d. June 11, 1970, Arlington, Fairfax County, Virginia), Charles Brunk Heinemann (b. October 26, 1882, Shelby, Illinois, d. abt. 1955), Anne Elizabeth Heinemann (b. March 13, 1884, Coles County, Illinois, d. April 07, 1886, Coles County, Illinois). Stephen was killed by lightning on June 24, 1884 in ColesCounty, Illinois. He is buried in Camp Ground Cemetery on the west side of Mattoon, Illinois. Various records indicate different information as to his birth and name. The information supplied here isverified from a family bible and information that was obtained from elder family members prior to their death from family genealogical records obtained from Stephen and Samatha's great grandsonCharles Duane Wilson, Sr., the submitters cousin. There is still some question as to his rightful first name although his grave stone lists his first name as Peter B. Other records in the family listhim as Stephen and P.B.H Heinemann and Benjamin H.
