Notes from James Perry - Wilhelm EHLERS name change to Wilhelm EHLERS BERNHARDS was recorded in church records on 6 May 1889 and 27 June 1889 without any explanation. Two different reasons are offered: (1) Hanna KLOCK O CONNOR - Wilhelm changed his name because he did not like the name EHLERS, given by the Grand Duke to an illegitimate son, 3 generations earlier. (2) Heinz BERNHARDS - Wilhelms' father-in-law [ Johann Friedrich BERNHARDS ] had no sons and wanted the family name preserved. [ Jim PERRY suggests that preserving the family name sounds like something a landowner without sons might want to do, and that Wilhelm didn't actually drop the name EHLERS, he added the name BERNHARDS ].
