First Honors Go to Steinway & Sons Employee, 59 Years With Firm

First honors of the evening went to Ernest Eichenbrenner, a cabinet-maker in the employ of Steinway & Sons, piano manufacturers, for fifty-nine years.

Mr. Eichenbrenner came to this country from Germany at the age of nineteen. In 1870 he joined the Steinway forces and since then has fitted sounding boards into Steinway pianos.

He was presented with a platinum watch and chain by L. J. Towneley,vice-president of the National Casket Company, Long Island City.

Mr. Eichenbrenner celebrated his eightieth birthday on December 6 and is married. He lives in the Steinway section of Queens.

Serves Steinway Company Fifty-Nine Years

Ernest Eichenbrenner, eighty, who was guest of honor at the old-time employees' dinner of the Queensboro Chamber of Commerce Thursday night, has been employed by Steinway & Sons' piano factory as a cabinetmaker for fifty-nine years.

He first entered the firm's employ in July, 1870, when its factorywas at fifty-third street and Park avenue, Manhattan.

When the Steinways moved their factory to Astoria he moved over, also, and for many years has been living at 25-30 Forty-third street, Astoria.

He was the father of thirteen children, ten of whom are now living.His wife, Anna, died two years ago. Mr. Eichenbrenner was born in Wurtemberg, Germany, and came to this country sixty years ago.

The Rev. John Langtry Williams conducted rites today for Ernest Eichenbrenner at his home, 25-30 43rd. Street, Astoria. Burial in St. Michael's Cemetery was directed by the Original Charles Weydig & Sons.

Mr. Eichenbrenner died Friday in his home. He was 91. A native of Germany, he had lived in Queens for 60 years. He was a retired cabinet-maker. Mr. Eichenbrenner leaves five daughters, Mrs. Mary Schmidt, Mrs.Minnie Saur, Mrs. Matilda Crestalli, Mrs. Mildred Schnepp and Mrs. Frieda Isoldi; four sons, William, Paul, Frederick and John, 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Around 1870–80, William Steinway established a professional community, the company town Steinway Village, in what is now the Astoria section of Queens in New York City.
