Dr. Allen Rax HICKMAN

MANHATTAN BEACH (Cal.) NEWS, 25 Sept. 1936, pp. 1,4. In a velvety gray casket, on the handles of which was depicted the 'Last Supper,' amid a wealth of glorious blossoms, the soft trilling of birds and the plaintive organ strains of old familiar hymns, lay all that remained on earth of Dr. Allen Ray Hickman. The services were held at Grace Chapel, Inglewood, Wednesday, September 23, at two o'clock, under the auspices of Glade White, mortician, of HermosaBeach. Reverend George Tracy Simons of the Manhattan Community Church, read comforting passages of scripture, gave a brief biography of Dr. Hickman's most colorful and useful life, told of his sweet friendly nature and how a life so lived left its impress on all, and so was made immortal in memory. Mrs. Dorothy Bushnell sang beautifully two of the doctor's favorite hymns, 'The Old Rugged Cross," and 'Shadows.' Dr. Hickman was an ardent Mason and as long as he was able attended the meetings of the Hermosa lodge, and so his friends from that organization conducted the very impressive Masonic services at the grave, placing on the casket his scroll and apron and a sprig of evergreen, symbolic of everlasting life. In his twelve -year residence, Dr. Hickman had made a place for himself among the people of the South Bay district, and the sympathy of the community is extended to Mrs. Hickman at this time. Allen Ray Hickman of 225 Eighteenth Street, Manhattan Beach, passed away at his home Tuesday in his 70th year. He was one of the South Bay's foremost citizens and was active in club and church affairs. Dr. Hickman was born January 21, 1866. Most of his life work was spent in Arizona, where his accomplishments still live on. He was a member of the Redondo Beach Elks, Hermosa Beach Masonic Lodge, Knights Templar of Bisbee, Ariz., and the El Zarridah Temple of Shriners in Phoenix, Ariz. He is survived by his widow, and three brothers, all of whom lived in the East. He was semi-retired during his 12 years of activity in Manhattan Beach. For 12 years he was head of the hospital department at the Copper-Queen Mining Company in Arizona.
