Lyna Mae APPEL

Lyna M. Abshier, 87, of Grand Island died on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, at Good Samaritan Society-Grand Island Village. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Third City Christian Church with the Rev. Scott Jones and the Rev. Josh Sikes officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island is in charge of the arrangements. Lyna was born on Dec. 1, 1928, to Homer and Naomi Appel at Carmi, Ill. She was baptized at the Carmi Christian Church when she was 11. She was a 1946 graduate of Carmi Township High School and went on to further her education, receiving a bachelor’s degree from Emporia State Teachers College and a master’s degree in speech pathology from the University of Wyoming. She began teaching in Kansas and Nebraska before moving to New Mexico. She retired from teaching after 32 years in June 1989. She was a member of the Alpha Sigma Sorority since 1962. She was a member of Third City Christian Church for 27 years. She would have celebrated 68 years of marriage to her husband, Wayne, on April 3, 2016. Survivors include her husband, Wayne; son, Morry (Deb) Abshier of Norfolk; daughter, Sue (Larry) Lehn of Stromsburg; grandchildren, Cindy (Dave) Anderson, Sherry (Brandon) Harris, Kari (Jesse) Martin, Joel Abshier and Brienne (Ryan) Splitgerber; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
