Clyde Arthur Zirkle, 81, of Gilman, died today (Sept. 18, 1998) at his home in Gilman, following a short illness. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 8 p.m., at Redenius Funeral Home in Gilman. A funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Ed Mumper at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church, Gilman, where he was a member and an usher for many years. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Gilman. Clyde was born April 25, 1917, in Piper City, the son of John B. and Henrietta Schunke Zirkle. His childhood and education were in Onarga. Mr. Zirkle was a carpenter, employed by A.R. Palmo Construction and Zirkle Construction. Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Leona Gillespie, whom he married June 18, 1935, in Gilman; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert E. and Kay Zirkle of Onarga and John D. and Gloria Zirkle of Gilman; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Joan Sterk of Milton, Wis., Ramona Anne and Don Gerdes of Onarga, Mary Louise and Ron Mulligan of Arlington, Texas, and Nina Jane and Tom Dundas of Clifton; 27 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; one sister and brother-in-law, Fern and Charlie Watson of Gilman. Four brothers, Bill, Frank, John and Charles; a son-in-law, Robert Sterk; and three grandchildren; are deceased. Mr. Zirkle was a member of Del Rey School Board, where he was a president from 1946-47. He was Gilman Building Inspector for several years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and Chicago sports teams.
