Source citation: Elkins Intermountain published 29 Apr 2005: Alice V. Zirkle, 84, a resident of Route 3, Shooks Run Road, Philippi, passed away at 8:05 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2005, in Ruby Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs. Zirkle was born Oct. 30, 1920, in Preston County, a daughter of the late Ivan and Ada Funk Howdershelt. In her early years, she worked at a glass factory in Morgantown and later at Sterling Facuet. In 1946, she met the love her life, Willard O. Zirkle, and was married Dec. 26, 1946. They moved to a farm, her second love in life, on Shooks Run Road in Philippi. In addition to the livestock, they raised two daughters, Susan Zirkle of Elkins and Mary Wolfe and husband, Robert, of Philippi; four sons, Ronald R. Zirkle and wife, Bonnie, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., W. Dale Zirkle and wife, Lora, of Fairmont, Jim Zirkle and wife, Clarice, of Belington, and Danny Zirkle of Philippi; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Flora Cox of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Meril Nestor and Beatrice Howdershelt, both of Bruceton Mills, and Mildred Meyers of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and one brother, Ralph Howdershelt of Lordstown, Ohio. She was preceded in death by two infant sisters and four brothers. Mrs. Zirkles life was surrounded by many young children along with her loving nature of always willing to extend a helping hand. She attended the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Friends will be received at the Wright Funeral Home in Philippi from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour. Services will be in the funeral chapel with the Rev. Richard Kiley officiating. Interment will follow in the Barbour Memorial Cemetery.
