Joseph Dawes Zirkle, of Bennetts Run Road, Lumberport, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2012 at his home. He was born November 6, 1922 on Jones Run Road, a son of Luther Joseph Zirkle and Icey Pearl Rogers Zirkle. On April 8, 1942, he married Bonnie Earnestine Baker who preceded him in death in December of 1978. Joe is survived by his children, Ronnie Joe Zirkle and his wife, Barbara; Sandra Jean Fain and her husband, Gary; Johnny Ray Zirkle; Terry Dale Zirkle and his wife, Janet; Teddy Douglas Zirkle and his wife, Rhonda and Jeffrey Lloyd Zirkle and his wife, Vicky and his sister, Margaret Nuzum. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren Daniel Zirkle, Cynthia Bryant, Stephen Talkington, Andrew Fain, Joseph Zirkle, Sarah Hall, Kristen Zirkle, Rebecca Taylor, Leslie Zirkle, Lisa Zirkle, Jennifer Turner and Jeffery Zirkle and 12 great-grandchildren. His surviving step-children are Carol Spatafore, Sandra Barton, Rebecca Cole, Bernadette Naegele, Jerry Thompson, Sam Thompson and Dan Thompson. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie, and 8 brothers and sisters: Winona Martin, Burman Zirkle, Stanley Zirkle, Glacie Zirkle, Phyllis Pigott, Virginia Winland, Coy Zirkle and Otovea Harbert. He was also preceded in death by one grandson, Michael Talkington and his second wife, Carlena Zirkle. Joseph joined the Navy at the onset of the war. His wife, Bonnie made two trips to Cleveland to be married because she wanted to be married on a pretty Wednesday. After being stationed in Rhode Island and Pensacola, they came home to West Virginia. Joe was a hard worker. He walked to Saltwell to work on a pipeline. He started a 43-year career in the mines by hand-loading coal with his father-in-law and brother-in-law, John and Allen Baker. He worked most of those years for Consol Energy, roof bolting for Consol at Blacksville. During those years he never missed a shift. In his last years, he enjoyed watching sports, especially when young children were playing. He thoroughly enjoyed playing with his grand-children and great-grandchildren. Joseph attended the Jones Run United Methodist Church. Friends will be received at the Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston from 3:30 - 8:30 Monday. Funeral service will be at the funeral home at 10:00 am Tuesday, September 25, 2012 with Pastor Harry Holbert officiating. Interment will follow at Lions Club Cemetery, Lumberport. A service of Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston.
