ASSOCIATES QUICK TO PRAISE SERVICE OF LEWIS PLAGER Ames, Ia. -- Death of Lewis W. Plager, veteran Grundy county extension director, drew expressions of regret Thursday from Plager's co-workers in the Iowa agricultural extension service. Plager, 61 years old, died Tuesday in a Waterloo hospital from complications following a heart attack suffered last week. Speaking for the agricultural extension service of Iowa State college in the temporary absence of Director R.K. Bliss, Leland G. Allbaugh, associate extension director, said: "No county extension director in Iowa knew the people of his county better than did Lew Plager. His people knew him, and the mutual association made it possible for him to help his county in many ways. He took an unusually keen interest in 4-H club work. Within the past year, he had much to do with the planning and testing of a new type of 4-H cattle feeding project which undoubtedly will be an important part of Iowa 4-H club work in future years. He and Mrs. Plager reared a family of outstanding young people." Paul Bangor, county extension director in Black Hawk County and Vice President of the Iowa Association of County Extension directors, praised Plager as a man who never compromised in fighting for what he believed to be right. Mr. Plager was recognized as one of the persons giving outstanding service to Iowa agriculture through extension work, and was winner in 1940 of the Distinguished Service award presented annually by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents.
