Notes for this person

Anna Maria "Mary"(Sirp) Brune was born October 14, 1793 in Bokel, Prussia. Her father was Johann Heinrich Sirp. Mary married Peter Heinrich Brune June 1, 1816 in Prussia. To this union three children were born, Catharine in 1817, Johann Friedrich in 1819, and Marie Louise in 1823. Peter died before Marie Louise was born in 1822. Shortly after Peter's death, Mary married Friedrich Wilhelm "William" Oberwortmann. It was a common tradition in Germany for the groom to take the bride's married name if she owned a prominent farm, so William became a Brune. William and Mary had two sons, Heinrich Wilhelm August Brune in 1831 and Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Brune in 1834. The combined Brune family immigrated to America by 1850, with the exception of Catharine. They came to the German settlement in Franklin county near Berger, Missouri. William died sometime before 1857. The 1860 U.S. Census record shows Mary living with her son Rev. John Henry Brune in Camp Branch in Warren county, Missouri. By 1875, she was living with her son Fred and daughter-in-law Charlotte (Riecke)Brune, near Lawrence, Douglas county, Kansas. Her grave has not been located. Although, there was a cemetery in Lake View, in Douglas county, Kansas, where Fred buried two children. That small cemetery was washed away in a flood and is now defunct. It is possible this is where Mary was laid to rest.
