1664 wurde Wilhelm Moritz in den Reichsfürstenstand erhoben. 1678 setzte der kinderlose Fürst Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen seinen Neffen und Adoptivsohn Wilhelm Moritz als Mitregenten testamentarisch für das Fürstentum Nassau-Siegen und den protestantischen Landesteil ein. Von 1679 bis zu seinem Tode 1691 war er als Nachfolger von Johann Moritz Herrscher von Nassau-Siegen.
