DEATH: Alfred Sohland, Realter And Author, Dies at 84

Alfred F. Sohland, Allentown realtor, imdustrialist and author, died at 2 p.m. yesterday in Allentown Hospital. He was 84.

Death came just about a week after his first novel, "Evidence Circumstantial," was published.

Earlier this week, The Morning Call's Roving Reporter wrote:

"Alfred Sohland is a distinguished retired industrialist and a widely known Allentown realtor. Until now his literary efforts have been confined to contributions to the The Morning Call, mostly on local historical subjects.

"For years he has nursed an ambition to write a novel. He started several, but always a busy business career proved the impediment that prevented him from finishing it. Now, in the twilight of a colorful career, and at a time when he is very ill, he has achieved the goal."

A native of Chicago, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Sohland.

He and his wife, the late Mrs. Dora L. (Stuekel) Sohland, came to Allentown in 1902. She died three years ago.

Sohland for years was active in the silk industry. For a time, he was assosiated with the D.G. Dery Co. of Catasaqua.

He also was in the building business. And he shared in the development of the thermosstat, oil burnor and dish washing machine.

In 1898, he joined the Astor Regiment when the Spanish-American War broke out. While in Panama, he was stricken with malaria. He was sent to a Chicago hospital for treatment. There he met his wife-to-be, who was a nurse at the hospital.

Sohland, who lived at 716 Chew St., was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church and Allentown Real Estate Board. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Bachman Funeral Home, 1030 Walnut St., Allentown.
