Første gang omtalt, da han kæmpede en drabelig kamp i striden mellem Svend Estridsen og den norske konge Harald Hårderåde ved Nivås udmunding på Hallands kyst i 1062.Nævnt igen i 1095, da han er på hævntogt til Juhlin for at hævne broderens ( Auden) død, som følge af sørøveres overfald på broderen under sejllads mellem Sjælland og Falster. I 1101 bliver Skjalm udnævnt til høvedsmand over hele Sjælland o
g Rügen.
