When August came to America, he became August Christian rather than Christian August and the family mostly used the spelling Struchtemeyer rather than Struchtemeier.

After August and Dorothea arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 11, 1851 they traveled north to St. Louis, MO. They settled initially in a small town about 70 miles west of St. Louis. It is called Warrenton, Missouri.

In 1855 August and Dorothea bought a farm east of Warrenton about 10 miles near the town of Wright City, Missouri which is also in Warren County.
