Notes for this person

At the age of seventeen (1922), Bertha Herkert entered the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis in Peoria, Illinois. She made her vows in religion in 1925. She became ill with tuberculosis and went to a sanatorium in Springfield, Illinois. She died on June 20, 1928, at the age of twenty-three.The Sisters of the Franciscan community recall that Bertha was "physically beautiful and possessed a pleasing personality, and exhibited promising musical and mathematical talent." The Sisters also reminisce about the Calhoun apples that her father supplied to the Motherhouse while his daughter was there.
