Erwin hat Maurer gelernt und später an der Ingenieurschule Holzminden zum Bauingenieur studiert. 1935-1937 und dann 1939-1945 war er Soldat. 1945 geriet er in russische Kriegsgefangenschaft, aus der er 1950 entlassen wurde. Danach arbeitete er als Bauingenieur bei der Bundesbahn in der Verwaltung von Bauvorhaben. Zuletzt war er Oberamtsrat. Erwin hatte als Hobby seinen Kleingarten und den Operngesang. Auf privaten Veranstaltungen trat er oft als Sänger auf.
Erwin starb 1987 an den Folgen eines Herzstillstandes.
