Wilhelm AHLF

2003 7 15: Dear Kent and Janet, I am happy to say that I have just received (this evening!) the St. Louis Probate Records from William AHLF's death in 1883. It included 60 pages of information and documents from the sale of his "segar " and tobacco shop, and other money, etc. I don't have time to go into the details at the moment, but... This clinches it for me. Besides Wilhelm's wife Emma who died without children, his siblings and mother also received money from him. It took a while for the money to arrive to them, since the probate was decided in 1883. The file includes receipts and I believe their signatures. Nice handwriting, by the way. All of them. 1) George AHLF, his brother, in St. Louis Dec 30, 1885 2) Henry AHLF, his 1/2 brother, living (or received the money) in Medicine Lodge, Kansas!!!!! Jan 11?,1886 (This is where his wife died!!!!!) So Janet's Henry is the Henry! 3) Frederich AHLF, living at 12 Newark Avenue Hoboken, New Jersey Jan 14, 1886 4) Catherina Maria AHLF, his mother, living (or received the money) in Medicine Lodge, Kansas Jan 9, 1886 5) Elise MILLER, geboren AHLF, living(or received the money) in Medicine Lodge, Kansas Jan 9, 1886. Note - she must have been living with or near her mother. 6) Emma Rochrs (his wife, must have remarried), formerly AHLF, living Lone Elm, Cooper Co, MO, Jan 1886 , received 1193.00. 7) Marie Boettcher, geboren AHLF, his sister (!found her!) in New York, Jan 27, 1886. Is that cool or what?! Now I can sleep, after spending hours reading Janet's great information and then receiving this. It sure seemed as if Henry Arthur's children had names that were very similar to my great-grandmother's children. Take care, Katherine Willis 2003 7 10: Dear Janet and Kent, Here is what info that I have on Wilhelm/William AHLF, brother of my greatgrandmother Elise AHLF MILLER. I would love any more info or corrections. He was born 8 April 1854 in Hannover.( May have been Living in Niederstricher deich) (Maybe Isensee/Cuxhaven). It looks to me as if he immigrated to America on June 11, 1873 on the Ship Thuringia, Manifest ID#00032950. 17 years old, "cigar maker". In 1877 he was listed in St. Louis City directory as occupation "cigar", residence 2909 Franklin Avenue, which is not far west of central downtown St. Louis. 1879 listed in St. Louis directory as William Ahlf, cigars, residence 1304 Morgan, also near downtown. 1880- In US census in St. Louis, occupation, "tobacco and cigars". Living on Eighth Street in the 2nd ward, at #718. According to his brother George AHLF's obituary, Wilhelm travelled in Illinois with this occupation, maybe buying the tobacco?. Wilhelm had a small cigar making factory and shop. 1881- Ahlf, William, cigars, shop 712 Franklin Avenue (where the conference center is now, north of the arch), residence 925 north 8th Street. 1883/4 St. Louis Directory: Wilhelm has the same shop, but residence 809 Washington, also in the center of St. Louis. George Ahlf is living nearby, a clerk for M. KOHRS. On 28 November 1880 Wilhelm married Emma Emilie Louise MEIER (later MEYER). They married in St. Charles, St. Charles, MO. Their church in St. Louis was Immanuel Lutheran Church, and the church records include his death and birth date, but unfortunately not his place of birth or parents. He died on 25 october 1883 in St. Louis from "Gehrnentzuendung" or brain fever. His death certificate says "softening of the brain". Buried Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church cemetery in St. Louis. I have info on his wife's parents if you want that. The church records say that he was "29 years 6 months 13 days", the death certif says "29 years, 6 months, 17 days." George's daughter writes that Wilhelm, Friedrich and Elise were his siblings, and George's obit talks about his brother Wilhelm in St. Louis. Incidentally, George married Wilhelm's wife's sister.
