He was the oldest son of Michael Friedrich and Christine "Sophie"(Albrecht) Jonas and immigrated to Texas with his family in 1852 when he was 22 years old. The family lived in New Braunfels for a while and then they moved on to Blanco County near Twin Sisters in 1855 with the Preemption Land Grants. He and his brother Wilhelm served in the Texas Rangers from Dec. 14, 1857 to March 14, 1858. He married Christine Gleich, August 6, 1858 in Spring Branch, Comal County, Texas. She was the daughter of Christian Gleich and Sophie Germer and was born in Erfurt, Hoppenstadt, Germany on 15 Aug 1839.
