Henry Beeson gave the ground for this cemetery, which is east of the courthouse, and is listed on multiple records as bring buried here. Since Henry Beeson came to the area in 1767 and bought land in the next year, he was still in his 20's at the time. He was a Quaker. Known as "Beesontown," the "town of Union" was founded by this Henry Beeson on July 4, 1776. "The history of Uniontown begins with the year 1767, when Thomas Douthet and Henry Beeson, (the latter a Quaker,) came from Virginia and selected lands within the limits of the present borough. Douthet's land was later purchased by Henry Beeson prior to 1774. On the lands that Henry Beeson selected he did not settle or make improvements until 1768. Henry Beeson is considered one of the first settlers in March of 1767 however his name does not appear on the list made by Commissioner Steele. There is little reason to doubt that Henry Beeson had his mill in operation at least as early as 1772. He laid out the town of Unionville in 1776 with 54 lots. The town was then called Beeson's Town and later became Uniontown." --Taken from 'The History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania: with biographical sketches of many of its pioneers and prominent men. Page 278.' "The original ground for the Oak Hill Cemetery was set apart for burials by Henry Beeson some time before 1793. Many of the old citizens of Uniontown were buried here, among whom were Henry Beeson, the donor of the ground and proprietor of the town. His brother, Jacob Beeson is also buried here, and died Dec. 16, 1818, in his seventy-seventh year." Page 339 Note: It appears Jacob's remains were moved to another cemetery. Page 339 From The History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, page 46: "Old Henry Beeson, the proprietor of Uniontown, used to relate that when he first visited here in 1767, there were some six inches of black nitrous matter visible all over this spring basin. The inference was that the "nitrous matter" referred to the great quantity of powder thrown into the water by Col. Dunbar's men. Powder casks were opened and their contents, stated at 50,000 pounds of powder were thrown in the pool." Henry Beeson sold the land on which the Fayette County courthouse was built on the 16th day of March, 1784, "for and in consideration of the love which he bears to the inhabitants of the County of Fayette, and for sixpence to him in hand well and truly paid." The History of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, page 134. Henry Beeson was first to be appointed coroner in 1786 through 1789. Page 248.
