<p><span style="color: #404041; font-family: 'Open Sans'; font-size: 15px;">Maria (Amodio) Hirth, 97, of Tolland and formerly of Ellington, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 19, 2017. Born in Sicily, Italy, the daughter of the late Guisseppe and Sebastiana (Interlandi) Amodio, she came to the USA in 1927 and lived in Brooklyn, NY, Hartford, East Hartford, and Ellington before moving to Tolland twenty-four years ago. Maria was employed by Pratt &amp; Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford for many years. She was a communicant of St. Matthew Church in Tolland. Maria was a member of the Red HatSociety, the Tolland Senior Center, and she enjoyed reading. She is survived by her beloved children, John Hirth of Tolland, Maryjane Thibodeau and her husband Maurice of Chaplin, Diane Hirth Delormeof Manchester, Thomas Hirth and his wife Jacqueline of East Hartford, Raymond Hirth and his wife Kelly of East Hartford, and Andrew Hirth of South Windsor; ten grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Joseph Amodio, and her sister Pauline Cannizzaro.</span></p>

From 1937 to 1940, payments were made in one-lump sums amounts with the first amount being seventeen cents. Following amendments in 1939, the payments turned into monthly benefits and increased. Following further amendments in 1950, cost-of-living increases were awarded to those who were receiving benefits. From 1950 to the present, benefits have increased yearly in response to inflation concerning the costs of living.
