Notes for this person

James was born in Missouri in 1860. The 1850 census shows his father

marriedto Martha, while the 1860 census shows him married to Arzelia, so

it's possible that either one could be his mother, however, there is a

seven year gap between James and his older siblings, leading me to

believe he's the son of Arzelia. In the 1860 census his parents are

living in Monroe County, Missouri. There is no mention of him, but he may

have been born right after the census was taken.

In the 1870 census, James is shown living with his parentsand seven

siblings in Jefferson Township. At age ten, his occupation is farm

laborer.

In 1880 he married Jennie Moss in Monroe County. The 1900 census

shows himand Jennie living in Washington Township with their two

daughters. It shows that they had four children, two lived. His

occupation is farmer, and it states that owned it with a mortgage. The

1910 census shows he and Jennie living the same place with a 12 year o ld

orphan named John Whye from New York. The1920 census shows James livin g

with Ethel Scobee, his daughter, and her son Glenn in Stoutsville. It

states that he owned the property, and was not working.

His daughter, Byrtee Lee died in 1930 and he was reported to

accompany her body back from Chicago to Stoutsville, so he must have

lived at least to 1930.

Jean Jordan Mitchell 10/98, William A. Scholwin, Jr 9/23/00
