Notes for this person

Gottlieb immigrated to the USA in 1850 with his wife and four children. They travelled on the vessel Magdaline from the port of Bremen on the Weser River arriving in New York on August 20th. The children were Caroline-20, Carl Wilhelm- 17, George-15 and Juliana-10. Oldest son-Friedrich Ernst-immigrated to the USA in 1845. The family settled in northwest Cook County, Illinois in Hanover Townshipnear the present day towns of Bartlett and Elgin. Local German immigration records indicate that Gottlieb was a miner, probably a coal miner, living at Liekwegen Number 10.

Gottlieb's grandson--William F. Struckman- prepared the Struckman Family History that this research is based on. That data was substantiated and expanded on based on information obtained from CLDS on line- data specific to Gottlieb is in package # 16.

Gottlieb is the godfather and uncle to my second greatgrandfather---Carl Heinrich (Henry) Struckmann-born 1819.

Gottlieb must have kept in touch with his family back in Schaumburg-Lippe after he immigrated in 1850 because when Godson Henry immigrated 20 years later he joined his Godfather in Hanover Township within weeks of landing at the Port of Baltimore. This is reflected in the 1870 census recorded on Gottlieb's farm on August 24th of that year. Gottlieb's surname was misspelled in the census index as Struchmen.

Gottlieb died on October 24, 1871 about a year after the 1870 census was recorded. The Great Chicago Fire started on October 8th of that year. Hanover Townshipis in Cook County but is much closer to Elgin than to Chicago. Actually Hanover Township abutted the Elgin City Limits. His death is not shown in the online death index for Cook County, perhaps because of the fire in Chicago where the Cook County records were kept.

CLDS entries indicate the date of Gottlieb's marriage to Sophia Krull was 25 Oct. 1827 while the STRUCKMAN FAMILY LINE prepared by his grandson-William F. Struckman--says it was Oct 20th of that year.

The 1870 census shows Gottlieb as a farmer with no value for real estate and $200 valuefor personal property. His son George's farm which appears to be next to Gottlieb's farm shows a real estate value of $14,200 and personal property value of $2,300. My great grandfather Henry and most of his family---very recent immigrants-- were living on these two farms. It appears that it was one big farm with Gottlieb's group living in a separate house.

In August 2007I visited the Popular Creek Public Library in Streamwood, Illinois, which serves an area including Hanover Township. I was able to find the 1870 and 1886 ownership plats for Hanover Township. Gottlieb's son George Struckmann owned a large piece of land in Sections 11 and 14 bordering to the south on Popular Creek in 1870. The 1886 plat also showed son George's farm as an eighth of Section 11 and asmall piece of Section 14 giving him access to Poplar Creek. Copies of the two plats are filed under Tab 4 of Struckman Family History Binder IC.
