Das Wappen führte 1408 schon Enno Haytatisna von Larrelt, es findet sich auch auf dem Sarkophag Eggerik Beningas. 1568 flüchteten die reformierten Houwerda von Appingedam auf ihre zweite Burg zu Larrelt, also könnte die familiäre Verbindung zwischen den Houwerda und den von Larrelt schon mindestens aus dem frühen 15. Jahrhundert stammen.
