About the writer, with whose photograph we grace this little book, his own daughter who lives with her mother in Lauterbach provides the following history:

The teacher Heinrich Knabenschuh, who was my father, was born on 11th of October 1863 as the son of master baker Heinrich Knabenschuh in Butzbach and his spouse Katharina, nee Hildebrand, from Niederweisel. Both parents died in the year 1884 one shortly after the other, and the little orphan ended up with Konrad Hagermann (see Family Page of Johann Konrad Hagemann) in Butzbach who raised him. He attended there first the public school (Volksschule) and later the Institute of the Pastors Busz. Between 1879 and 1882 my father attended the Teacher Seminary in Friedberg with good results and shortly thereafter he worked as a teacher first in Vilbel, after that in Semd, and finally in Grein. As per the description which follows, my father was in the French Foreign Legion from the year 1885 until the year 1888. After his return he worked as a teacher from 20th of January 1889 until 4th of May 1890 in Ilbeshausen, and from that date on until his death on 22nd September 1895 in Allmenrod. So much for the personal record.

I would like to give thanks once again and publicly to the "Darmstaedter Zeitung" for the rights to publish this work, and to my fellow-student Konrad Hildebrand from Gettenau for thegracious contribution of the author's photograph."

(fm KnButz-1 of 28 Apr 1998):

Death $ 1895 September 22 or 29 of Heinrich Knabenschuh [b11.10.1863]

Ref Ref. 6. This is Heinrich Kn. the Teacher & Legionaire, the son of Heinrich Kn. & Kath.Hildebrand. Note that ref.16 says he died 22.9.1895, likely in Lauterbach area. His death is not in Allmenrod KB ; neither is it in the Herbstein St.A. Dist. (which includes Rixfeld). A local historian says he was ill & had to leave his job - & returned to his Heimat. So tried Butzbach records. His death is not in Butzbach KB.

Comment Are there any Riegelhuth [his Foster Mother] or Hildebrand in Butzbach today?? There is no Obit in the Wetterau Bote from 1895 Sept. 15th. to Nov. 6th. [there are actually no birth or death notices of any kind in this paper]. Try other papers!!

(fm Gisela Knabenschuh, geb. Kaule, ltr to Ron Kay of 13 May 1999):

"As my grandmother had died very young from tuberculosis I once asked Antonie what her father had died of so young and she made a very evasive answer murmuring something about nerves, unfortunate circumstances and it was far from me insisting on being told things she most obviously wanted to keep to herself. Herbert did not want to talk about it either. When I came to know the Sauerbierfamily at Dortmund (I have relatives living there from my father's side) Erna Sauerbier told me about Heinrich Knabenschuh's most deplorable fate. She quite bluntly asked me if I did not know that Heinrich had committed suicide by hanging himself from a bedpost. When her husband Hermann overheard her telling me these for these times compromising details even mentioning Heinrich's recruitment in the Foreign Legion he asked me not to tell the Philippi family about his wife's indiscretion. I could well understand this attitude. Toni and her husband and even Herbert were very devout and conservative Christians and somehow a bit old-fashioned in their way of looking at things taht they felt a kind of blame and shame put unto them bay a suicide in the family. It was something never talked aboutand that is why I don't know where and when Heinrich died and where he was buried.

I remember a visit to Rixfeld (near Lauterberg). Someone asked me about a 'Buchlein' Heinrich had written - and a cousin of Herbert said to this man: 'You know it is something we don't talk about'. I think that was an allusion to the book Rosina translated and I think my children found it among Herbert's belongings after his death."
