(fm Ahnentafel received 7 Feb 1996 from Stadtarchiv Butzbach): Stadtrechner = City Accountant (in lateryears) and Strumpffabricant = Stocking Manufacturer. At his son Heinrich (Henry)'s marriage in England, his profession was shown as Hosier.

 

(fm daughter Maria Elisabetha's marriage record): Strumpfweberfabricant = Stocking Weaver Manufacturer.

 

(fm Butzbach Markuskirche death record of his 2nd wife): "Stadtrechner = Municipal Calculator of Butzbach, Member of Church - and School Managing Committee and of the Commission of the Poor".

 

(fm Markuskirche, Butzbach Parish Register of Deaths Vol. 9, Pg. 76): d. 5 Jun 1854, a Strumpffabricant = Stoclhelm Klein, both Strumpfwebermeisters. (Note that no sons witnessed - Johann died in 1846 and Christian was living in England: immigrated between 1851 & 1860, probably before Jun 1854 (because he wasnot listed as a witness at his father's funeral).

 

(fm Grueninger Family History book in Butzbach, Pg. 197 and 198): "Strumpfwebermeister / Strumpffabricant und Stadtrechner".

 

(fm Knabenschuh family tree w/ notes, fm Erika Gillman to Ron Kay): "He was in St. Louis, USA in 1799/1801, was supposed to have a large build, spoke good Latin, went to Butzbach's "LatinSchool", quick to understand, and wrote beautifully."

Marriage 1803 July 31st. of Friedrich Conrad Knabenschuh, Bürger and Strumpfweber meister [weaver of hose]and son of Christian Knabenschuh who is also a Bürger and Strumpfwebermeister ; and Maria Catharina Winter [actually born Freÿtag] the widow of Anthon Winter who was a Bürger and Strumpfwebermeister.

Ref. p81 Entry 10 of film ; Kfam-215. See also Ref. 6, which states that her first husband was Andreas Winter. See also marriage p141, Entry Feb. 11th., 1821 ; which states that Maria Catharina was the widow of Anthon Winter and born Freitag. Per Church Records she married Anthon Winter 1793 June 3rd. ; and Anthon Winter died 1802 April 20th.

1778 January 1st. Born in Butzbach to Christian Knabenschuh [I] & Maria Cath. geb. Freytag. Per E.M.Notes he attended the local"Latin School" & spoke/read Latin well.

1792 May 28th. Confirmed. Thereafter likely Apprenticed as a Strumpfweber. Maybe to Christian [I] or Conrad Lichtenfels.

1796 Likely completed his Apprenticeship & became a Journeyman. 1799-1801 Per E.M.Notes was in St. Louis, USA. I very much doubt this.

ca1800 Friedrich Conrad became a Strumpfwebermeister.

1803July 31st. First marriage to Maria Cath. Winter geb. Freytag, widow of Strumpfwebermeister Anthon Winter. Maria Cath. brought 2 sons [Johannes & Andreas] & 1 daughter [Catharina] into the marriage. F.Conrad & Maria Cath. also had 2 sons & 1 daughter born to their marriage.

1804 April 1st. Birth of Johann Ernst.

1807 May 3rd. Birth of Christian [iii].

1810 October 11th. Birth of Maria Sophia.

1811-1812 Musterlisten includes the family #379 of Friedrich Conrad Kn. He owned ¾ Morgen of Garden; and the family had wealth of 2030 Fl.See Print for more details.

1815 Conrad Kn. paid Taxes of 3 gulden, 17 albions, 3 kreutzer. Per "Stadtrechnung" records.

1818 May 14th. Step-son Andreas Winter, b:1797, height 4' 8" completed military service in the Landgraf's guards. See 1811-1812 Musterlisten.

1819 January 10th. Death of his wife Maria Catharina.

1819 Conrad Kn. had a2 storey haus at Wieseler Strasse 14. Value 600 gulden. 32 It looks as if this haus had been in the Kn. family ownership for at least 10 years - per E.Gillmann.

ConradKn. also has a 2 storey haus with cow stall & barn at Zwerchgasse 2. Value 1030 G. 32

1820 Sept. 5th. Step-son Johannes Winter, b:1794, height 5'2", completed his military service. See 1811-1812 Musterlisten.

1821 February 11th. Married his 2nd. wife Anna Katharina Seippel, dau. of Bäckermeister.

1821 September 20th. Birth of Johann Heinrich Kn. who later founded the London & Manhattan lines.

1823 December 29th. Birth of Maria Elisabetha.

1824 At June 4th. Confirmation of Sophia Kn., Fried. C. described as Stadtrechner &Strumpfwebermeister.

1830 Jan. 31st. His daughter Maria Sophia married Johannes Grunuger [iv]

1833 Feb. 5th. his son Ernst married Elis. Bommersheim. Fried. C. desc. as Strumpfwebermeister & Stadtrechner

1833 Aug. 25th. At marr. of Christian [iii] & Anna Cath. Gruninger; F. Con. desc. as Strumpffabricant & Stadtrechner

1836 Fried. Conrad the Godfatherat bapt. of Christian's son ; & described as Stadtrechner.

1838 March 14th. Death of his 2nd. wife Anna Katharina geb. Seippel. Friedrich Conrad is described as local townAccountant [Stadtrechner] & member of the local church & school boards, and the Poor house Committee.

1853 Sept. 12th. Friedrich Konrad wrote An Accounting & Disposition of hisAssetts. Ref.29.

1854 June 5th. Death of Friedrich Conrad Kn., Strumpffabrikant, Church & City Accountant, & Member of the Poor house Committee. See also notice in Stadt=undLandbote of 1854 July 22nd. which describes Konrad as a Church & School Board member, and member of the Poor house Committee.

1854 Oct. 21st. edition of Stadt & Landbote 24/5. Notice of Auction of the Assets of the Estate of Stadtrechner Konrad Knabenschuh. Includes a Haus, etc on Guldengasse, & 21 parcels of land in both Butzbach and in Niederweisel. The proceeds would likely have been dispensed to Konrad's children per Ref.29.

On this day was the bachelor Friedrich Conrad Knabenschuh, local burger and master long sock weaver and the legalson of local burger and master long sock weaver Christian Knabenschuh, married to Maria Catharina Winter, the widow of the late citizen and master stocking weaver Anton Winter.

February 11th 1821 Page 141 Entry 1

"In the year of Christ 1821, the 11th of February, were wedded in the local City parish church, as per required law... and after third public proclamation, Friedrich Conrad Knabenschuh, the local citizen and master long sock weaver aged 42 years, and the spinster Anna Catharina Seipel, 37 years old ; both from here.

This Conrad Knabenschuh was married for about ten years to Maria Catharina, the widow of Anton Winter, and nee Freitag. This wife died three years ago.

The father ofthe newly married groom was the son of the now deceased Christian Knabenschuh, burger and master stocking weaver and his mother, who also died.

The parents of the newly married bride are also both deceased. The father was Mr. Franz Seipel, burger and master baker, from here, and the mother Anna Elisabetha, nee Kobelt. In that marriage were six children... whereabouts the bride was thethird.

The present protocol was witnessed and signed besides myself, the first city pastor........."

In the yearof Christ 1854, the 5th of June in the afternoon at half to six o'clock died Friedrich Conrad Knabenschuh, long sock manufacturer as well as church and city accountant and member of ..., 76 years, five months and four days old and was buried publicly on the 7th of June in the afternoon at three o'clock as per Christian rites.

The witnesses were Carl ...mann and Wilhelm Klein, both local Burger and master long sock weavers, who signed this protocol besides myself the pastor.

Marriage 1821 February 11th. of Friedrich Conrad Knabenschuh 42 year old Bürger and Strumpfwebermeister ; and 37 year old Anna KatharinaSeippel. Friedrich Conrad is the widower of Maria Catharina born Freitag who was the widow of Anton Winter - she died three years ago. Anna Catharina Seipel is the spinster daughter of Herr. Franz Seipel, Bürger and Bäckermeister from here, and Anna Elisabetha Kobelt. There were 6 children of the marriage, of which the bride is the third. Both parents of the bride are deceased.

Comment Translated by RTS from the Print. Note that the bridesmother was a Kobelt - that is Henry the baker's maternal Grandmother [deceased] was a Kobelt.

Comment: Translated by B.Heil & RTS.Assume that no sons present in Butzbach at the time & so not at the funeral : Johann Ernst was dead ; Christian [III] was in London ; and Johann Heinrich alias Henry the baker, was in Manhattan.
