[fm Kfam 931 of 3 Mar 2000]:

• Next I did a long, careful search of "Passenger Lists, Outwards, to

Interstate & Overseas, Victorian Ports" for the exit of Friedrich Conrad Kn.

from Melbourne (where he arrived on 1858 Feb. 24th. on board the Alfred from

Hamburg) to Sydney where his brother John was living. I searched films

#284480 (Jan.1858 to June1858) and #284481 (July1858 to Dec.1858). There

were hundreds of vessels leaving for England, Calcutta, Callao, New York,

San Francisco, etc. - and many, many to Tasmania, New Zealand and Sydney &

Adelaide. Of the thousands of passengers listed (I searched every name)

almost non had German names - they were all English, Scottish or Irish. And

the handful of German names were badly corrupted. Over this time period

there was only one name listed which stood out like a sore thumb, that of "C

Knahenbeck, male, single, age 34" on board the Steam Ship Wonga Wonga under

Master David Walker which departed Port of Melbourne to Sydney March 1st.

1858 with 101 adults & 3 children.

I realise that the spelling is "incorrect" but it was at least very well

written, and I suspect that this was indeed Conrad Knabenschuh. The

Australians at that time very rarely came across a German, particularly on

Intercolonial vessels; and with a combination of arrogance and the

inability/unwillingness to readGothic script on the part of the

purser/shipping clerk, and Conrad's inability to communicate in English - I

see such corruptions as being common place. The March 1st. timing of this

departure also coincides very well with the Feb. 24th. arrival in Melbourne

of Conrad Kn.
