Notizen zu dieser Person

JLK's Grandfather.

Born 8 May 1869 in Butzbach, Oberhessen, Hessen, Germany.

Married to Julia Augusta Kutscher 28 Mar 1900 in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, New Haven, CT.

Died 15 Jan 1925 in New Haven, CT of a ruptured appendix.

(fm Butzbach Markus Kirche Taufen (Baptismal) records, Pg. 380 of 1869, #19): Johan Georg Karl Knabenschuh, baptized 30 May 1869, Born 8 May 1869. Witness (Godfather?): Johannes Knabenschuh (his uncle Johannes (II) Conrad Knabenschuh?). (LDS microfilm # 1197072).

Baptismal record shows his name as Johan Georg Karl K-. Used name of Karl Knabenschuh in the USA.

Marriage Certificate states: "S(?)RAU-SCHEIN (Marriage Certificate). Dass Herr Karl Knabenschuh aus Butzbach Hessen-Darmstadt und Julia Kutscher aus New Haven Conn. am 28ten Marz 1900 in New Haven in Gegenwart der Zeugen (of the Witnesses present) Marie Reiclul (Reichuh?) & Eduard J. Kutscher (Julia's 11 yr. older brother). Ehelich verbunden worden sind wird hierdurch glaubwürdig bezeugt (Matrimonial connected, become, is attested credible hereby) New Haven den 28ten Marz 1900. C. H. Liebter, Luth. Pastor".

His first son was named Karl Gustave Knabenschuh, Jr. b. in New Haven, CT on 24 Mar 1902, d. in Hartford, CT of a fractured skull on 5 Jun 1964, Age 62 (********Why Junior?). The Gustave was given after his mother's brother August (known as Gus) Kutscher, or her father, August G. Kutscher. Note that Karl Gustave's baptismal record shows a witness (godfather?) as August W. (his uncle "Gus").

His second son was Louis William, b. 17 Jan 1905, d. 22 Apr 1913, Age 8, all in New Haven, CT. ********Was he named after Karl's two half-brothers, Ludwig and Wilhelm?

His first (and only) daughter, Marie Alice was b. 12 Jan 1914 in New Haven, CT. She was named after Karl's sister Marie Elisabetha.

(fm Markuskirche, Butzbach ParishRegister Vol. 19 (?) Pg. 380): b. 8 May 1869, bap. 30 May 1869, father Friedrich Conrad Knabenschuh, mother Anna Margaretha Klein.

(fm Knabenschuh family tree w/ notes, fm Erika Gillman to Ron Kay): "Emigrated first to Chile, later to USA". (It is not known if this notation is true).

Emigrated to New York City from Bremen, arriving on 9 Nov. 1893 on the steamer "Lahn", Master H. Hellmers, of the Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen Steamship Co., recorded on passenger list (National Archives Microcopy No. 237, "Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York 1820-1897", Roll 620, 19 Oct - 14 Nov 1893, List Nos. 1606-1747; LDS microfilm # 1027721) as follows: "No.: 262; Ticket No.: 1154; Name: Carl Knabenschuh; Age: 24 Yrs.; Sex: M; Single; Occupation: Butcher;Native Country: Butzbach; Destination: New York City; Location of Compartment: Steerage Comp. 1; Number of pieces of Baggage: 1; Port of Embarkation: Bremen.

{He was 24 Yrs, 6 Mos,1 day old upon his arrival}.

In reviewing the Passenger List, the following was noted: (The numbers on the passenger list do not include 34 additional persons that were reported byEllis Island). Embarkation: Bremen (Germany) and Southampton (England); First Cabin: 48; Second Cabin: 84; 24 Cabin passengers boarded in Southampton; Steerage: 199, of whom 25 were US Citizens;

Adults Children Infants

1st Cabin: 44 2 2

2nd Cabin: 71 10 3

Steerage:180 15 9

Totals: 295 27 14

I reviewed the entire passenger list looking for other persons from Butzbach, or whose destination was New Haven, CT: There were no other passengers from Butzbach listed. Two passengers gave New Haven, CT as their destination:

#150 Elimar Lieling; Age: 25; Sex: Male; Citizen of: US; Occupation: Baker; Citizen of New Haven, CT; Destination: New Haven, CT.

#151 Ctngnst (?) Lieling; Age: 16; Sex: Male; Citizen of: Brake, Germany; Destination: New Haven, CT.

Both of these were quartered in Steerage, Compartment 1, as was Karl Knabenschuh. Did Karl become acquainted with these two, and was that the reason that he located in New Haven ????

********.

At the time of his departure from Bremen, Germany{(Oct 1893 (?)} his father {Friedrich Konrad (II) age 57}, his sister Marie Elisabetha (age 27, and not yetmarried, his half-brothers Ludwig (age almost 15) and Wilhelm (age 7-1/2) were still living.

********Why did he leave Butzbach, Oberhessen, Germany?

Perhaps his second step-mother (Friedrich Konrad's 3rd wife) favored her own sons, Ludwig and Wilhelm, over Friedrich Konrad's children by his first wife, Johann Georg Karl* & Marie Elisabetha!?

A little less than two years later, his sister Marie Elisabetha (now age 29 yrs, 2 mos), married Heinrich Nepomuk Haltmeier on 25 Sep 1895. (I met her {age 81} and her husband {age 80-1/2} at their son's (Otto Wilhelm Haltmeier) house in Kronberg / Taunus, Germany in Jul 1947).

His daughter Marie Alice sent me a photograph of him (and 6 others & a horse) outside of a brick building, standing in front of a horse drawn wagon marked " Choice Marketing, L. C. Pfaff & So(n (s)), (Chu)rch St. Per Elsie Julia Koch (Allen)'s 17 Feb 1998 letter, L. C. Pfaff & Sons was a New Haven, CTwholesale meat house.
