Lewis enlisted in the Confederate Army at the age of 21 on June 12, 1861.Wounded at Gaines' Mill, Virginia on June 27, 1862. Detailed as a butcheron Sept. 16, 1862. Reported absent on detail through December 1864.Paroled on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. He was namedin the will of his younger brother, William Robert VanDyke. After the death of his first wife, Lewis married Nancy Beatty. OnDecember 24, 1884, Lewis and Nancy sold 160 acres of land more or less inCleveland county, North Carolina. The deed makes reference to a stake inthe Kings Mountain road. His father had owned 158 acres along Muddy Creekwhich runs from Cherryville, North Carolina south until it runs intoBuffalo Creek. The two connect approximately one mile east of the currentCleveland county mall on US Highway 74, Shelby, North Carolina. It isassumed that the 160 acres sold by Lewis and Nancy is the same propertythat his father owned. Reason: the land was willed to William RobertVanDyke in James Vandyke's (the father) will. William Robert then willedthe property to Lewis in his will. Since William Robert died during theCivil War and Lewis was the administrator of his will, it is possiblethat the two tracts of land are the same. Also, in researching theCleveland county deeds, I could not find where Lewis ever acquired anyreal property. Lewis and Nancy sold the property to John P. Kiser for$1,400. According to Zellie McGill: "At the death of Mary [Payne], Lewis moved toVance County, N. C. between Williamsboro and Flatrock communities. Helived there several years and moved to Greenville, N. C. His descendentssaid he did not like farming because it was too dirty. During the time hewas there he married Nan Beatey or Beatty. Date of her birth and deathare unknown. The date of Lewis is also not known. One descendent stateshe might have moved to Alabama with his son George and is buried there."In an email message from Zellie dated January 6, 1996, she wrote "...Ihave no information on Nancy Beatty, except that she was his second wifeand had two children, Thomas and George. They were divorced but do nothave a date. She was supposed to be highly intelligent but verycantankerous." Also she wrote "... I learned tonight from my aunt SusieWoodlief that he was living in Washington or Polkton, N. C. when hepassed away. It could be Washington, Georgia. It is believed that Lewiswas living with his son, George when he died." George died in Alabama. Lewis S. VanDyke enlisted in Co. H, 23 NC Regiment North Carolina Troopson or about 20th day of April 1861.
