According to the 1790 census, Richard was the head of a household locatedin Lincoln County, North Carolina. There were five males under 16 yearsold, three males over 16 years old, one of which would have been Richard, and four females. In 1785, Richard purchased real estate from a George Lamkin. A few yearslater, he acquired real estate from John Peter Baker by executing on ajudgment obtained in a lawsuit. The judgment is dated April 15, 1787.This tract of land was sold to John Drake on September 1, 1791. This deedestimated that the tract was a total of 100 acres. Another tract of landowned by Richard was sold to a Joseph VanDyke in 1798 for $200. Onewitness on this deed was Jonathan VanDyke. I have no clue as to therelationships between these VanDyke's, but I assume that Joseph andJonathan are sons of Richard. The property was located in Lincoln County,North Carolina. During the years 1789 through 1800, Richard served several differentcivil and criminal juries. His household during the 1800 census showsthat there were two males between the ages of 10 and 16, one male 16 to26, one male over 45, two females 16 to 26, and one female over 45 yearsold. This is the last census in which I have found Richard for the Statesof North Carolina and South Carolina. During the early 1800's, I have found real estate transactions inSpartanburg County, South Carolina where property was bought and sold byJames and Jonathan VanDyke. Richard appears as a witness on some of thesedeeds. The above property shown as being acquired by Richard in LincolnCounty, North Carolina might have actually been located in SouthCarolina. Please remember that during the early years of our nation, theStates of North Carolina and South Carolina had many disputes as to theexact border. Lincoln County was divided into Gaston, Lincoln, andCleveland County during the 1840's. Gaston and Cleveland are locatednorth of the South Carolina line.
