Peter's family of origin lived in Neukirchen, but he apparently moved to Dom-Esch after his marriage, as all of his children were baptised there.
Peter's son, Jacob, said on his petition for U.S. citizenship that the family sailed from Bremen on May 29, 1855 and arrived at port of New York around July 5, 1855, but did not know the name of the ship. Todd Pierce found the following ship ma
nifest for the Patrick Henry which departed from London, England and arrived at the port of New York on July 7, 1855: Daniel Nussbaum, age 20, Catherine, age 29, Gertruth, age 13, Margarethe, age 19, Peter, age 51, Johanna, age 54, Wilhelm, age
8, and Jacob age 17.
Outagamie County land records show that on 18 July 1855, Peter Nussbaum bought 80 acres of the S half of SE quarter of section 28, township 22 north, range 16 east in Ellington township. On 18 August 1855, he bought 80 acres at the N half of th
at same section. In 1856, they sold a quarter acre to the Ellington school district. In later years, land transactions occurred between Peter and his sons , Daniel, Joseph, Jacob, and William.
The family is shown on the federal census for Outagamie Co. p.169 on August 4, 1860 in Ellington Township, Post Office Stephensville as follows: dwelling #1248, family #1219, Peter Nussbaum, age 63, farmer, value of real estate $2000, value of pe
rsonal property $650, birthplace Prussia; Catherine, age 59, housewife, birthplace Prussia; Daniel, age 33, farmer, birthplace, Prussia; Margaret, age 24, housemaid, birthplace Prussia; Jacob, age 22, farmer, birthplace Prussia; Joseph, age 20,
farmer, birthplace Prussia; Gertrude, age 18, milkmaid, birthplace, Prussia; Mary, age 16, milkmaid, birthplace Prussia; William, age 12, birthplace Prussia. The agricultural schedule showed 82 improved acres, 78 unimproved acres, $2000 cash va
lue of farm, $50 value of farm equipment, $200 value of live stock with 3 milk cows,4 working oxen, 7 other cattle, and 18 swine.
The family is shown on the federal census for Outagamie Co. p.231, on June 3, 1870 in Ellington Township p.5, post office Stephensville, as follows: dwelling #35 family #36 , Peter Nussbaum, age 70, farmer, value of real estate $4000, value of
personal property $400, birthplace Prussia; Katie, age 68, keeping house, birthplace, Prussia. Directly below him, the family of J. Nussbaum is listed. (This is probably his son, Jacob. )
