He came to the United States with his parents and other family members as a child in 1855. The family appears on the federal census of 1860 in Ellington Township, Outagamie Co. WI. He made a declaration of intent to become a U.S. citizen on Octo

ber 26, 1868 in Outagamie County.

He appears on the June 4, 1870 federal census for Outagamie Co., in Ellington Township p.11, as follows: William Nussbaum, age 23, farmer, value of real estate $1000, value of personal property $190, birthplace Prussia; Mary Ann, age 18, keepi

In June of 1873, William Nussbaum and his future brother-in-law (possibly also his cousin), Peter Schweitzer, bought the land on which he built the Franklin House Hotel in New London WI for $650 from Charles Allen. Two additions were built in l

ater years. William's wife and children assisted in the work of the hotel--making beds, cleaning rooms, stabling the guests' horses, cooking and waiting tables in the hotel restaurant. The abstract of title for the Franklin House shows that Will

iam bought out Peter Schweitzer's share in May of 1876. At various times, there were leins on the property to another brother-in-law, Nicholas A. Schmit, and to John Schmit, Mary Beyer, G.A. Murray, Michael Cooney, Mary Gurner and Freidrich Fehr

mann. The property appears to have been sold to Charles Hanke in August of 1899 for $5000. However, Anna Kraus Nussbaum made a statement in 1936 that her family ran the Franklin House continuously from 1873 until about 1901 with the exception

of 1893. The abstract does show a mortgage paid in full by Mary Gurner to William and Anna Nussbaum on August 22, 1901. According to his daughter, Gertrude, he sold the hotel when she was very young due to his poor health.

This family is shown on Soundex N215 for the federal census of 1880 in New London, Waupaca Co.,WI, volume 31, enumeration district 175 sheet 5, line 18 as follows: William Nussbaum, age 33, birthplace Prussia, wife Marianne, age 29, birthplace

Bohemia; Mary K., age 9; John J, age 7; Anna, age 5; Agnes, age 3; Magdalene, age 7/12.

He became a United States citizen on 22 April 1887.
