By the way his life was so exiting. He was born as the second son of the later townmayor Hans Herel. He attended 1539 - 1550 the latin-school of Hersbruck and in the following time he studied on the at that time very famous university of Wittenberg. He studied 10 terms and became a Doctor of the roman and kantonian rights. With this titel the world was opened for him. Lately since 1564 he worked in Nürnberg. Besides Nürnberg he worked for a lot of princes and other realm positions.   In the very important realm city Nürnberg the power wasn´t devided. All power was in the hand of the small council  ... the authorities, the legislation and the iurisdiction. They needed lawyers and consultant of rights (Rechtskonsulent). They had a very high reputation and have had as high honour as the seven eldest men and the old mayors. They were allowed to wear special dress and on celebrations to show more luxury. They, their sons and servants have been allowed to wear a sword. And for their property in town they were tax-free. Dr. Herel was Dec. 6th 1564 elected as a "sweared" lawyer and after two years as a councillor (Ratskonsulent) and again after one year (Feb. 28th 1567) also as a marriage and towncourt-consultant. His declaration of obligation (May 5th 1567) is to find in the state-archiv of Nürnberg. The documents are not quite clear about his positions. They are rather different and the names of his occupation change: consultant and lawyer then Conciliarius et Advocatus and Consultant. Never as a council consultant. Without doubt mainly he worked as a consultant of the council. Simultaneously he was towncourt and consultant of the council. He was judge for civil rights and marriage law. And he was civil-servant.   He was the 66th consultant of the council of the realm-city Nürnberg. Besides him another eight consultants of rights worked for the realm-city. About his work is much knowledge. For instance there is a catalogue of his manuscripts. There you can find all his concepts and other of his collegues. His son Sigmund kept them and and gave them free only for the studies. Dr. Herel let 22 big books. In some books you will find more than 600 pages. Still 51 years after his death the council made a catalogue about a part of his work. Only this part shows his many-sided juridical and political work. For instance instructions for the represents of Nürnberg  for the imperial court. There are plenty of such instructions. For many years the council let adjust delicate problems through him.   His profession was a political work because Nürnberg was also a realm-city. And for foreign affairs he was a special man. Normally the foreign affairs was a domain  of the council. The council decided the guidelines and the legation. Mostly they have been out of the own rows and for difficult problems they allocated a consultant of the council. Exceptionally the council chosed a consultant of the council as a represent ... like Dr. Herel. The first time he was the represent of Nürnberg was on the realm-day of Speyer 1581. Next year 1582 he ws again member of legation for the real-day of Augsburg. 1583 he became envoy of the council-day. This was a special honour because normally only patricians became such envoys.   1593 he accompanied a councillor Joachim Nützel to a cities-day to Heilbronn. But they have been imprisoned. Later they came free.   His very special job was to advice the delegation for the danger of Turkey. He always was a member of the represents of the real-city of Nürnberg. He the expert of Nürnberg in defencequestions was the only one who representet Nürnberg at all three realm-days.   1582, 1594 and 1597 he was represent of Nürnberg. He was the only one who represented the interests of Nürnberg by all realm-days. With these political missions he was on the top of his career. Because of his extraordinary work for the realm-city Nürnberg they decided for an extraordinary equivalent. They made him a present ... an eternal valid letter (1st May 1598). For his 33 years of work they gave him an eternal pension of yearly 200 fl. After his death all his direct descendants should get this pension. 200 fl was nearly the salar which was paid for an consultant of council. A really generous dotation. They did it very very seldom.   After his death Sigmund got it till his own death. Because of he didn´t had own descendants they could have stopped it after his death. But what did they do? Sigmund had founded a foundation for students. And the city of Nürnberg paid the pension on although they could have stopped to pay.   And he got another very important official position as a Hofpfalzgraf. The emporer Rudolf II. at 30.10.1576 appointed him as a Hofpfalzgraf. He had to do with  voluntarily jurisdiction. Perhaps he also appointed imperial notaries. He could legitime illegitimate children, appoint a guardian or make free of minority. In Nürnberg he was the only one. So he became very influential. It is very interesting ... for the council it was more important that he was the honourable consultant of the council and lawyer. His relations and the fellow-citizen have seen more the Hofpfalzgraf and second as the honourable consultant of the council and lawyer.   At least he had another honourable position. He was mentionor (I don´t know if the translation is correct). In Nürnberg there was a small council only with patricians and beside a bigger council. Their members were mentionors. These councils were elected for lifetime. It was a very honourable and desirable marking. The members of the bigger council were electet by the smaller council out of patricians and honourable people and residents. The bigger council had special realm-city problems to solve. It was like the second house of parliament. For instance to conroll the election of the smaller council, for creat special taxes and resolution for danger of war. The election as a mentionor was a big honour. Genealogists an chronists in that time always show on the mentionor-status. For patricians the mentionor-status was supposition to become a member of the small council.   Dr. Herel was 33 years of age and he had one of the highest position which was reachable for a non-patrician. Therefor he could marry a person out of of patriciate and nobility. The first marriage was with Helene Praun widow Hammerer and widow von Rosenthal (Praun was one of the highest reputated families in Nürnberg and later on they were cooperated into the patriciate). After her death he married a woman of nobility Rosina Held von Hagelsheim. She was married first with an patrician Endres Kreß. On page 120 you find amagnificent not translatable wedding poem. The had two sons. The early died Paul Hermann an Sigmund.   You can find pictures of him in the museum of Nürnberg in Hersbruck and some interisting descriptions. For instance: this the very famous Joh. Herel from Hersbruck ... he was a decoration for his homecountry and an eye of the jurisdiction. Or Joh. Herel from Hersbruck-Nürnberg, consultant of the rights, imperial Pfalzgraf and consultant of plenty of princes and other points of the empire and especailly of Nürnberg.   In Nürnberg you can find the main part of his library. It has 657 books. The contents is about 446 juridical, 39 french, 50 historical, 65 phylosofical and 57 theological works. The most of them are written in latin language. You can find editions of Luther, Melanchton, Calvin and Bezas. They think he was calvinist.   He son Sigmund kept the library. And he put in with golden letters a supra-ex-libris with the Herel coat of arms "Sigmundus Hörl A. 1618" and pictures of him and his father. It is a pity he died in the same year.   His widow presented the library at 14th of July 1619 the council library. It was the wish of Sigmund.   Herel died 6th of Dec. 1603. For his honour rang the big bells of St. Sebald.   Dr. Johann Herel is one of the important sons of Herbruck.   A very very exiting man. Translation by: Günter Wagner
