MRS. JOHN BARTEL, MENNONITE PIONEER PASSED AWAY MONDAY Mrs. Jno. Bartel, Sr. passed, away at her country home, March 12,1934, 6:40 a. m. She had been failing in health for the last fourmonths. However, for the last two weeks her condition continued tobecome more critical until her death. Mrs. Bartel was born inRuekenan, South Russia, June 22, 1867. At the age of 12 years she camewith her parents to the United States and settled near Jansen, Nebr.In 1886, August 22 she united in marriage to John Bartel, also ofJansen. In 1902 she moved to Meade County where she resided until herdeath. Nine children were born to this union, one son, eleven yearsold preceded her in death. Mrs. Bartel united with the MennoniteChurch in 1886 in which she remained steadfast until her death. Sheleaves to mourn her departure her husband, three sons and fivedaughters, Mrs. Jno. J. A. Harder, Jacob, Peter, Mrs. A. L. Classenand John Bartel, all of Meade; Katie, Marie and Anna at home.Twenty-four grandchildren, one great grand child, and other relativesand a host of friends. Mrs. Bartel's three sons, one son-in-law andtwo grandsons, were her pallbearers, at the services. She was afaithful loving wife, mother and grandmother. Funeral services wereheld Wednesday, March 14 in North Mennonite church. The followingout-of-town relatives and friends attended the funeral servicesWednesday: Mrs. Jacob Bartel, Mrs. C. W. Barkman of Johnson; Mr. Peter P.Bergman and son Pete of Corn Okla. ************* Obituary of my wife and mother, Maria Bartel. She was born MariaBarkman June 22, 1867 Ruckenau South Russia. In 1878 she emigrated tothe US with her parents and settled down in Jansen Nebraska. In 1886she became a Christian and was baptized by Rev Abr L. Friesen, andbecame a member of the Kleine Gemeinde. In 1886, Aug 22 they weremarried by Henry Ratzlaff, 9 children were born, 4 sons and 5daughters. One son died at the age of 11. on Oct 1933 mother becameill with pains in her chest. Some days she felt better but oftenrather ill. Jan 2, 1934 we went to the doctor in Meade. since then shespent much time in bed or just sitting. She was in much pain the lastfew days. Doctor diagnosed her illness as heart failure. She was 66years 3 months and 18 days of age, married 47 years 6 months and 18days, where we shard joys and sorrows. In 1907 they migrated fromJansen NE to Meade KS with other families. She had 24 grandchildren.Three grandchildren and one great-grandchild died before her. Thoseremaining are husband John, Mrs. John J A Harder, Katherina Bartel,Maria Bartel, Jacob J Bartel, Peter B Bartel, John B Bartel, Mrs. A.L. Classen and Anna Bartel. 1 brother-M B Barkman, Jansen NE 3sisters-Mrs. Heinrich Reimer, Mrs. Jacob Reimer Cuauhtemoc, Mexico,Mrs. Henry Ratzlaff, Dalmeny, Sask and many relatives and friends.
