Mrs. Mary Classen was born to John and Maria Barkman Bartel at Jansen,NE on Oct 2, 1892. She moved to Meade, KS with her parents in 1907where they moved on to a farm south of Meade. She accepted Christ asSavior and then was baptized on Jun 4, 1911 by Elder Abram L Friesen,and joined the Kleine Gemeinde church. On Apr 16 1944 she became amember of the Emmanuel Mennonite Church. On Dec 20, 1953 she wasmarried to Jacob R Classen. Mr Classen passed away on August 9, 1956.Mrs. Classen moved into Meade a few months later on Nov 2, 1956. She enjoyed helping in the Ladies Sewing Society. She also madeherself and her car available to transport various ladies to differentplaces. Her happy outlook and her desire for God's best were evidentin the last years of her life. She was also a correspondent for theMennonite Weekly Review. She had not been in the best health for some days having contacted atouch of pneumonia. She was taken to the Meade Hospital on Wednesdayevening at about 8:30, and passed away suddenly the next morning onThursday, Aug 22, as the result of a heart attack. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob R Classen; by herparents; by 2 brothers-John at the age of 12, and Jacob J.; by 1sister-Agatha, Mrs. John J. Harder; and by a step-daughter, Marie,Mrs. Dave C Reimer. She is survived by 4 step-sons: Dick and Katherine Classen of Meade,KS, Martin and Katherine Classen of Dallas OR, Willie and ElizabethClassen of Walnut Hill, FL, and George and Bertha Classen of Sturgis,MI; by 2 brothers-John B Bartel and wife and Peter B Bartel, both ofMeade KS; by 3 sisters-Katie of Lone Tree Lodge, Agnes-Mrs. Abe LClassen and Anna, all of Meade, KS: by 1 sister-in-law, Mrs. Jacob JBartel; by 17 step-grandchildren, by 15 step-great-grandchildren, andby relatives and friends.
