Notes for this person
ELKHART - Edward “Toby” Carl Borneman III, 74, passed away unexpectedly Sept. 11 from post-operative complications. Toby was born July 30, 1940, in Elkhart, to Edward “Bud” Carl Jr. and Eleanor “Nanny” Colbert Borneman. He married Sandra Kaye Hadley on June 24, 1967, in Fort Wayne. Toby is survived by his beloved wife, Sandi, of 47 years, along with his three children, Susan (Steve) Fusek of Carmel, Edward “Ed” Carl IV (Nicole) Borneman of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Mary (Jason) Kuehne of Bristol; his very special six grandchildren, Elley, Mallory and Taylor Kuehne, and Edward “Quint” Carl V, Drew and Devyn Borneman; his brothers, David (Dina) Borneman and Charles (Linda) Borneman, both of Elkhart; sister Ann (Tom) Semans of Dublin, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his dogs, Abbey, Milly and Popsicle. Mr. Borneman graduated from Elkhart High School in 1958 and has actively served on all class reunion planning committees. He attended Indiana University, the University of Idaho and graduated with a master’s degree in psychology from St. Francis College. After graduation, while teaching at Central High School in Fort Wayne, Toby was set up on a blind date and met the love of his life, Sandi. He then moved back to Elkhart, where he owned and operated the family business, Borneman Industrial Supply, until he retired in 2003. He was a member of the fraternal order of Elkhart Rotary, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Elcona Country Club, where he scored a hole-in-one. Toby proudly was a lifetime member of Sigma Chi fraternity, along with 20/?20 Club and Horseradish Club. Toby was a life member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry board and worked in the food pantry. Toby’s other interests included traveling the world; eating at his favorite restaurants; grilling out; fishing; poker night with his buddies; playing with his dogs; swimming in the pool; enjoying the beautiful view of the St. Joe River; spending time at Klinger Lake and Fort Myers Beach; coin collecting; watching his favorite IndyCar driver, Takuma Sato; and cashiering at Best of Your Nest’s estate sales; but most of all he loved spending time with his family and his friends whom he cherished so much. Toby was a special friend to many; so gentle, kind-hearted and had such a keen memory. He touched many lives and will be sorely missed. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 W. Franklin St., Elkhart, IN 46516. Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Elkhart. Father Daniel Repp will officiate. Memorial contributions may be given to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 226 W. Lexington Ave., Elkhart, IN 46514; or the Humane Society of Elkhart County, 54687 C.R. 19, Bristol, IN 46507. Elkhart Truth, Sept. 14, 2014
