Alonzo MINGUS

Reference: Walter W. Mingus. According to this source, Alonzo's milita

ry identification number was #248303. He enlisted in the Army, Ohio Volun

teer Infantry, 82nd Regiment in November of 1861. He committed to a thr

ee year term in the capacity of a wagon maker; however, he contracted typh

oid fever and was found to be incapable of physical labor. He receiv

ed a medical discharge on January 18, 1863. He received a pension of $

12 per month (full pay at that time).

The following is from the notes of Sharon Cooper, letter dated Februa

ry 8, 1975: "At a Called Court held at Norwalk [Ohio on] January 27, 18

37 the Hon. D. Higgins, Judge..." appointed guardians for Elisa-aged 8 yea

rs; Clark--aged 6; Trew--aged 5; and Alonzo-aged 2 years of age. They we

re listed as the minor children of Benj. Mingus, deceased and the guardi

an assigned was Trew Pattee, with Levi Parsons and Ashley Hollister accept

ed as surieties in the sum of $1,000.00 While Elizabeth Mingus appea

rs to be buried near her grandfather, Hieronimus Mingus, the other childre

n's whereabouts are unknown at this time.

In the 1840 Census Alonzo appears and is listed as being 6 years of ag

e. In the 1850 Census for Erie County, Ohio, he is listed as being 16 yea

rs of age.

In the 1860 Census for Hayesville, Ashland County, Ohio, at p. 152, Alon

zo is listed as a wagon maker. Ashland County is just southeast of Hur

on County, Ohio.

Alonzo Mingus is found in the 1880 Census for Deer Creek, Sherman Count

y, Nebraska. He is listed as 46 years of age with Ordell, age 22, and Ot

to C., age 12. No wife is listed for Alonzo Mingus on this census recor

d. The place of birth for both his mother and father is listed as Germa

ny (perhaps caused by a mix-up with the census taker as to where "Berli

n" was located).

There are records made regarding pension papers for this Alonzo Mingus; ho

wever, it is not known what type of service he served. [Was he a soldie
