Birth:
He was born in the village Wallbach in the Gersdorf parish near Döbeln in Saxony in Germany at 5 p.m. on the 24th of December 1857. His parents were Carl Gottlob and Christiane Friedericke Mulde. (H1)
The village Wallbach had 296 inhabitants in 1910. (A1)
Gersdorf had 787 inhabitants in 1910. Then there was a post office, a registry, a Lutheran church, a factory producing chairs and a business exporting fruit. (A1)
Childhood and Youth:
He spent his childhood in Wallbach. His father was a carpenter. (H1)
He arrived in Bremen sometime before 1881. (B1)
Perhaps he wanted to migrate to America. Many people came to Bremen to go overseas.
Marriage:
On the 12th of February 1881, when he was 23 years old, he married the single Marie Hollwedel. Both were living at 18 Neander Straße in Bremen. (B1)
He was a silversmith. (B1)
Wilhelmine Balcke wrote to me that he worked for the Koch & Borgfeld Company in Bremen. He engraved lettering on silverware. He did a lot of private work at home as well.
The family moved to a flat in 52 Korn Straße in the suburb Neustadt. They lived there in 1884, when Elsa Frieda was born. (B1)
Wilma Balcke told me that later he was able to buy a terrace house at 44 Gellert Straße in the suburb Neustadt. The family moved there.
Wilhelmine Balcke told me that he retired when he was 65 years old. Later he worked as a guard in the Fokke museum in Bremen. He liked gardening in his garden plot, which was near the airport. He had a parrot.
Death:
He died at 4.15 p.m. on the 14th of February 1933 in his house. He was 75 years old. The autopsy indicated that he suffered from a heart disease. (B2)
He left behind his wife and nine grown up children.
Research Notes:
1. Whilst I was in Europe in 1988, I was inside his house. His daughter-in-law Else Mulde, the new owner, celebrated her birthday.
2. One person of Franz Mulde's family told me that his parents owned a forrest in Saxony. She said that they owned a saw mill. They became poor when all trees were felled. According to church records this is not true.
