1. Biography Samuel "Sam" Arthur Hill was born 4 May 1871 in Freeburg, St. ClairCo., IL. He was the son of Peter Hill and (Hannah) Emaline Mitchell.Sam married, 11 May 1892 in Valier, Franklin Co., IL, Nancy "Nan"Elizabeth Eubanks. Nan was born 22 January 1875 in Christopher, nearValier, in Franklin Co., IL She was the daughter of William SmithEubanks and (Mary) Matilda Eubanks who were 1st cousins. Sam died 24December 1941 in Freeburg, St. Clair Co., IL where he and his wife,Nan, had lived since about 1936, and was buried 27 December 1941 atMaplewood Cemetery in Marion, Williamson Co., IL. Nan died 14 May 1949at her home in East Alton, Madison Co., IL; she is buried at MaplewoodCemetery in Marion, Illinois, where she and Sam had made their homefor most of their married life and, had raised their family. About September 1877, Samuel's parents, Peter and (Hannah) Emaline, moved to Franklin County, near Valier from Freeburg, IL. They bought afarm. It must have been during this time that Samuel met his futurewife, because Peter and family had moved to New Athens by 1890.Peter's father, James Hill, died on the 2nd of July 1891, and Peterinherited a part of the old family home and land. He and family movedto Freeburg where we find them in 1892 living in the old family homeand farming three hundred and seventeen acres of land, part of whichbelonged to him and the rest to his father's estate, wheat being hisprincipal product. We do not know if Sam had stayed in Franklin Co.and farmed his father's land or traveled back to Franklin Co., in1892, to marry his sweetheart, Nan Eubanks. Sam and Nan lived withSam's parents in Freeburg on the old family farm that his grandfather,James Hill, had built for his beloved wife, Elizabeth Thrift. Heretheir two eldest children were born. They remained on the farm until1895-1896 when they moved to Franklin County where they had bought aneighty acre farm one mile north of Zeigler, where the new Zeigler HighSchool now stands. Sam's father, Peter, must have still had land inFranklin Co. at that time because Peter also returned to Franklin Co.after a few years, but only for a short time. Peter moved to Marion,Williamson Co., IL and bought land in the vicinity of Rock Creek wherehe died in 1899. Records show that Peter and Emaline Hill's son,Joseph, also had a parcel of land in Franklin Co. Peter's widow,Emaline Hill, and their sons, Sam and Joseph had land there as late as1917. Sam's land was not sold; he deeded it to his eldest daughter,Ella Hill, who never married.
