1. Biography PETER HILL was born, on the birthday of the father of his country, 22February 1835 in Freeburg, St. Clair Co., IL. He was the son of JamesHill, Sr. and (Sarah) Elizabeth Thrift. Peter married 12 May 1859 inSt. Clair Co., IL, (HANNAH) EMALINE (EMELINE) MITCHELL. Emaline wasthe daughter of William W. Mitchell, Sr. and Rebecca Teter. HannahEmaline was born 8 October 1838 in Randolph Co., IL. She died 12 March1917 in Marion, Williamson Co., IL and was buried 14 March 1917; Peterdied 24 July 1899 at Rock Creek, Williamson Co., IL. Emaline and Peterare buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Crab Orchard Twp., behind thePleasant Grove United Methodist Church which is in the vicinity ofPaulton, near Marion, Williamson Co., IL. Peter Hill was a descendant from old pioneer stock, the HILLs and theWILDERMAN's. Peter's grandfather & grandmother were Peter Hill, Sr.and Elizabeth Wilderman. Peter Hill, Sr. was the son of William andMary (Rittenhouse?) Hill of Franklin Twp., Fayette Co., PA and ofConneaut & Beaver Twps., Crawford Co., PA; the family owned land inboth counties. Mary Hill had died by 1803. We do not know if WilliamHill stayed in Franklin Co., moved to Crawford Co., died, or, if hecame with Peter and his family when Peter and Elizabeth, with theirfamilies, some of Peter's siblings and Elizabeth's parents, George andPatience Dorsey Wilderman, of Redstone Twp., and their children, camebetween 1803-1805, from Franklin and Redstone Townships, FayetteCounty, PA to Indiana Territory, later Illinois Territory and settledon Turkey Hill, which is between Belleville and Freeburg in what isnow St. Clair Co., IL. Emaline was a descendant from three great pioneer families, theTETERs, HENCKELs, and MITCHELLs. Her father, William W. Mitchell wasthe grandson of the Reverend Peter Mischler/Mitchell, Sr., ourimmigrant ancestor, through William's father, Peter Mitchell, JR. BothWilliam W. Mitchell, and his wife, Rebecca Teter were descendants ofthe Reverend Anthony Jacob Henckel, and also of, (John) GeorgeDieter/Teter, both of whom were our immigrant ancestors. Peter and Hannah Teter Mitchell, Abraham and Mary Kittle Teter, andtheir children, with Hannah and Abraham's mother and siblings came tothe Northwest Territory in 1797 with the BADGLEY Colony and settled inSt. Clair and Randolph Counties in what was later to become the Stateof Illinois. These families, with a sense of adventure, wandered to many new placesas they sought to establish themselves and improve their lives. TheHILLs and WILDERMANs were, for the most part Millers, as well asfarmers; the MITCHELLs and TETERs were farmers. Peter Hill's father, James Hill, Sr. was born 19 June 1811, TurkeyHill, Illinois Territory, now St. Clair Co., IL. James married 8January 1833, (Sarah) Elizabeth Thrift born 20 April 1812 in eitherRowan Co., NC or Christian Co., KY. Mitchell.Their daughter, Hannah Emaline Mitchell, married James Hill's son,Peter Hill. Did Peter and Hannah meet through Solomon and Mary Teter? "1860 Census St. Clair County, Illinois," Township 1 South, Range 7West, Page 173, Family No. 1283: *Peter Hill, age 25, born IL (married 12 May 1859) Emelina Hill (nee Hannah Emaline Mitchell), age 21, born IL Hannah Emaline Mitchell signed the renunciation record relinquishingher rights to administer her father's estate. Peter Hill was appointedguardian of Hannah Emaline's half-sister, Isabell MITCHELL, 23 June1862, and of her half-brother, William W. Mitchell, Jr., 8 November1870. Peter and Hannah Emaline moved from St. Clair Co., to Macon Countywhere they resided for four years. They returned home and in 1877 theysold out and went to Texas, but only stayed for two months. When theyreturned to Illinois, they settled in Franklin County, Illinois. Peterwas a farmer, and at one time (1891) owned a Flour Mill in New Athens,St. Clair County, Illinois. He bought land in Franklin County andengaged in farming for ten to twelve years or so. They never sold thisland. Emaline and sons retained the land for a long time after thedeath of Peter. Hannah Emaline's half-sister, Isabell W. Mitchell wasstill with them when the 1880 census was taken. Mitchell, female, age 20, servant, born IL, Father: IL,Mother: IL Demetress W. Hudleston, male, age 20, servant, born TN, Father: TN,Mother: TN In the late 1880's or early 1890's, his father's ill health, and thelove for the old family farm, pulled him home again to St. Clair Co.From his father, James Hill's obituary, 1891, we found the item: "Ofhis immediate family the deceased leaves surviving his widow, onedaughter, and four sons. The eldest son, Mr. Peter Hill, is a residentof New Athens and was formerly a well known mill owner....." And thenfrom: "Portrait and Biographical Record, St. Clair Co., Illinois,1892", we found the following: "Our subject (Peter Hill) farms threehundred and seventeen acres of land, part of which belongs to him andthe rest in his father's estate, wheat being his principal product."
