William T. Borneman "Bill", 84, Oconto, passed away from cancer on June 25, 2011, at Woodland Village Nursing Center, Oconto, Wisc. Bill was born April 12, 1927, in Elkhart, Ind., to the late George O. and Zella C. (Howard) Borneman. Bill graduated in 1945, from Elkhart High School, where he was class president and captain of the tennis team. He briefly served in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge in October of 1945. Afterwards, he attended Kalamazoo College, in Michigan, before beginning what would be a nearly 64 year career in the newspaper business. Bill began his newspaper career at The Elkhart Truth (Ind.) from 1947-1968, starting off as a sports reporter, police and city court reporter, sports and news editor and, finally, city editor. From 1968-1972, he was the managing editor of The Daily Times (Ottawa, Ill.), before purchasing the Oconto County Reporter. In 1952, he married Mary L. Trout, in Elkhart, Ind. They had two children together, Carol J. and William D. In 1962, he married Lorene L. Schrock, in Indiana. They had one child together, Thomas J. On May 2, 1969, he married Dorothy F. (McClure) Spicer, in Ottawa, Ill. Dorothy passed away on Mar. 28, 2010. He was the managing editor of the Oconto County Reporter since Feb. 1972, when he and Dorothy purchased it. The Bornemans also started the Beacon Shoppers Guides. The newspaper group is now owned by the Gannett Corporation. Bill was an avid tennis player and runner. He organized the Oconto tennis tournament. He enjoyed following University of Michigan football and Oconto High School sports. He was made an honorary OHS Blue Devil in 2010, for his coverage of OHS sports events since 1972. He missed only two home football games in 38 years. Bill was a member of the First American Lutheran Church, Oconto, Oconto American Legion Post 74, and was an active member of the Oconto Kiwanis Club, in which he was a past president. He was of German and colonial English descent, with American ancestry dating back to Jamestown and Plymouth colonies (Mayflower descendant of Colonial Governor William Bradford). Bill is survived by his brother, John C. Borneman, Ventura, Calif., son William D. (Doris) Borneman, Cypress, Tex.; daughter, Carol J. (Tom) Hall, Sanford, Fla.; son Thomas J. Borneman (Carol), South Bend, Ind.; stepson, Charles E. (Debbie) Spicer, Gonzales, La.; stepdaughter, Chona N. Zimmerman, Oconto Falls; stepdaughter, Clara L. (Paul) Weiss, Green Bay; grandson, Markus Borneman; granddaughter, Monika Borneman; and step-grandchildren, Carrie Weiss, Emma Weiss, Marshall Spicer, Madison Spicer, and Rachel Spicer. He is also survived by nephews, nieces, and many friends. In addition to his wife, Dorothy, he was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, the Rev. George H. Borneman; and his, sister Kathryn E. (Borneman) Lansche. Private memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, with the Rev. Mary Zupansic, of the First American Lutheran Church, Oconto, officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Oconto.
