Notes for this person

Despite being born in Naters, Valais , Switzerland, and his father in Montecatini Terme, Pistoia, Tuscany, the Scardigli family originated in Ponte Buggianese, Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy (Virgilio Scardigli, b. 8 Dec 1839). Ponte Buggianese is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Pistoia in the Italian region Tuscany, located about 45 kilometres (28 mi) west of Florence and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) southwest of Pistoia. It now belongs to the province of Pistoia, which was formed in 1927 under the rule of Mussolini, and had the lowest income per capita in Tuscany in 1966 due to high poverty levels. Ponte Buggianese is still poor, and has probably always been so, which is probably why Virgil's grandparents moved to Montecatini Terme, not that it was much better. Ponte Buggianese's population is about 8,900. His mother Adelaide, and her four sons Mario (Marius Benjamin), Virgilio (Virgil Ulysses), Silvio (sic, Levio A. "Lee") and Alberto. joined husband Narciso Scardigli in Butte, Montana, after a four year separation and after emigrating from Naters, Valais, Switzerland aboard the S.S. Chicago, from Le Havre, France, on 25 Nov 1911, and arriving at Ellis Island and New York City on 5 Dec 1911. Adelaide died in Butte on 9 Feb 1920, from the Spanish influenza, which had finally made it's was there on it's way to killing between 50-100 million people in the worldwide pandemic. She was only 36 and Virgil was 15. His father, Narciso died on 17 Oct 1923, of tuberculosis, at the young age of 42. He was by then a widower and Virgil was 19. Virgil became a communist in later life. Burial: Ivy Lawn Memorial Park Ventura Ventura County California, USA Plot: Section Garden of Tranquility MEMORIAL ID 130822280
