Notizen zu dieser Person

Narcisius Scardigli was born on 25 Mar 1881 in Montecatini Terme, Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy (not to be confused with Montecatini in Pisa). His family originated in nearby Ponte Buggianese, Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy. His father Virgilio Scardigli, b. 8 Dec 1839, grandfather Luigi Scardigli, b. 1806, and great-grandfather Giuseppe Scardigli, b. abt. 1781, all appear to have been from Ponte Buggianese. Ponte Buggianese is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Pistoia in the Italian region Tuscany, located about 45 kilometres (28 mi) west of Florence and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) southwest of Pistoia. It now belongs to the province of Pistoia, which was formed in 1927 under the rule of Mussolini, and had the lowest income per capita in Tuscany in 1966 due to high poverty levels. Ponte Buggianese is still poor, and has probably always been so, which is probably why Narciso's parents moved to Montecatini Terme, not that it was much better. Ponte Buggianese's population is about 8,900. Narciso married fellow Italian Adelaide (Adeloisa) Oberto in Valais, Switzerland, on 17 Jan 1903, and they had at least four children there: Mario (Marius Benjamin), Virgilio (Virgil Ulysses), Silvio (sic, Levio A. "Lee") and Alberto. Narciso emigrated from Naters, Valais, Switzerland, without his wife and four sons aboard the S.S. Lombardia, from Genoa, Italy, on 27 Mar 1907, arriving at Ellis Island and New York City on 11 April 1907. Narciso appears to have moved to Butte, Montana, almost immediately after arrival, to work as a miner. His family joined him there in 1911, emigrating aboard the S.S. Chicago, from Le Havre, France, on 25 Nov 1911, and arriving at Ellis Island and New York City on 5 Dec 1911. Narciso submitted a Petition for Naturalization with the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization on 22 Dec 1915 (Declaration of Intention and Petition For Naturalization attached). He resubmitted same on 24 Nov 1919 (attached). He signed his name as "Narcisius" in the 1915 declaration and Narciso thereafter. His Find A Grave memorial had his name as "Narcissus," which has been edited to show "Narciso." In his 12 Sep 1918 World War I Draft Registration, he listed himself as an Alien Declarant, despite checking the box for Citizen. He erroneously wrote "Italy" in the box for Native Born and "Naturalized" was left blank (Draft Registration attached). His handwriting/signature is clear on all documents, so he appears to have had an adequate education. I cannot determine at this point whether or not he was successfully naturalized. Unfortunately, Narciso died on 17 Oct 1923, of tuberculosis, at the young age of 42. He was by then a widower and his son Virgil was 19.
