25 May 1738 Francis Thornton from Thomas Meriwether release Orange Co Deed Bk 2

20 June 1738 Elizabeth Meriwether relinquished her right of dower at the dwelling house of Thomas Meriwether in Hanover County

After the death of Thomas Meriwether, Elizabeth married Robert Lewis, in his old age. Robert had been married to Jane Meriwether, aunt to her dec'd husband,Thomas. This is understandable, as Robert was a friend of Thomas. With her marriage to Col. Robert Lewis, a prenuptial agreement dated 4 Oct 1759 and recorded 26 May 1761, Thomas Walker held both estates in trust. Col. Lewis died in 1765.

" With her marriage to Robert Lewis, by the terms of the will of Thomas Meriwether, Elizabeth lost control (or the burden) of Thomas Meriwether's estate and the guardianship of her daughters. No records have been found to indicate who became the new guardian but it seems likely that the daughters continued to live with their mother until they married. After the death of Thomas, Elizabeth probably continued to live at "Cloverfields" until, and perhaps for a while after, her son Nicholas claimed his inheritance. An interesting speculation is that her son Francis bought, in 1758, land (from his Uncle David Meriwether) for her to live on and then sold it when she decided to re-marry. On Nov 13, 1769 the Louisa County Court ordered the recording of the final division of Thomas Meriwether's remaining estate." - Guy Benson Meriwether
