Virginia Olive KURFISS

Both of her parents were from Ohio. Sources - 1900, 1920 and 1930 Illinois censuses. Her father, born in Ohio in April, 1843, and a widower, was living with Virginia and her family on the 1900 Illinois census. Death certificate #0000130. Illinois statewide online death index says she died in Cooper Township, Sangamon County. Her father was a farmer and born in Ohio in about 1844. Her mother was born in Ohio in about 1847. Virginia was the 2nd of 3 children listed. A source for Jennie's nickname comes from the family Bible. There are several Kurfisses buried in Rochester Cemetery. Among them are David who died December 7, 1924, and Martha J. who lived from 1848 to 1893. Also there is a William D., a Civil War vet, who died August 6, 1932. Date on paperwork is June 8, 1944. Her age was 72 years, 6 months, 25 days. Her mother's obituary: Mrs. Martha J. Kurfiss died at 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday July 19, 1893, at the home of her son William Kurfiss near Cascade. She had been in poor health for a long time but was confined to her bed only about a week. Her system seemed to be generally wrecked, and her ailment a combination of diseases. Mrs. Kurfiss' maiden name was Vance. Her only surviving sister is Mrs. Nelson Campbell, of Rochester. She was born in Franklin county, O., Oct 12, 1848, and came to Illinois in 1853. She was married to David Kurfiss about 26 years ago and four children were born to them one of whom died in infancy. The surviving children are her two sons William and Charles, and her daughter Jennie, wife of C. H. Schwartz. The funeral occurred at 2 p.m. to-day at the residence of William Kurfiss, and the interment at the Rochester cemetery. Rev. M. L. Browning conducted the funeral and burial services. The family Bible gives her date of death as June 8, 1942. Jennie was 1 of 4 children. Her mother died near Cascade, Illinois, at the home of her son, William. Source - her mother's obituary.
