The first three generations of this Allen family, Edward, first generation, of Ipswich, Mass., Samuel, second generation, of Suffield, Connecticut and Hanover NJ; and Job Allen, third generation, of Morris , NJ, were researched and carefully documented by Charles Carroll Gardner, associate editor of the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey. They were published in that magazine in Volume 15, Number 2, pages 34 to 40. Therefore, it is not necessary to repeat same here, except for the parts in the third generation which dovetail exactly with the "Allen-Minton Manuscript". Included also are some quotes from Crayon"s "Rockaway Records". The "Allen-Minton Manuscript" was written on May 16, 1840 by Job Allen III, of Fredericktown, Knox , Ohio. The manuscript states in more detail that "The Allen family was originally from Scotland". They had been imprisoned for their religious opinions. This may be a good reason why most were staunch church members, elders in the Rockaway area. "Samuel and the eldest of two sons, Job, and the other Ebinezer, and one daughter, immigrated to this country". Job first settled in Connecticut, and from there he moved to Newark, Orange or Amboy, NJ; then prior to 1730, to Rockaway Valley, now called Denville. Here he purchased a 200 to 300 acre farm, built the first forge there, and the first church, as some of the framework was made early as 1752. He was a carpenter, miller, forgeman. He constructed some of the first roads and bridges and many of the first dwellings, when every nail used was hand made. His wife's name, according to old deeds and papers was Christiana--------. No mention was ever made among the old papers at Rockaway of his father Samuel or his brother Ebenezer. He was at this early date, the founder and builder of the first iron industry at Rockaway
